Sutton, NH 03260<\/p>\n<p>Dear Wes,<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for your note, though I\u2019m sorry to hear the dis-<br \/>\ncouraging news. It is simply a bad time for publishing a<br \/>\nbook. And it may be a bad time forever, with the big publishers<br \/>\nin New York and Boston. I think I told you that my first book<br \/>\nwas rejected thirteen times before it was accepted \u2013 and that<br \/>\nwas a time when publishers were almost looking for new poets,<br \/>\nat least compared to now. Fran\u2019s firing was a real blow to me,<br \/>\nto my optimism about things. I will keep looking and keep<br \/>\nthinking. When I see Jon Galassi \u2013 who is the editor at<br \/>\nHoughton Mifflin, but who has an assistant who reads most of<br \/>\nthe poems that come in \u2013 I will approach him cautiously, and<br \/>\nthat might be worth trying again. But any one possibility is<br \/>\nalways an improbability. Meanwhile, we will get the poems into<br \/>\nsome good magazines, and in the long run I think that will go.<\/p>\n<p>Have a terrific time at Detroit. I spent seventeen years<br \/>\nonly forty miles away.
