Dear Don,<\/p>\n

I was sorry to learn of James Wright\u2019s death. It must have been
\na very tough thing for you. Has there been any news of it in the press?
\nI have not read of it anywhere outside of your letter.<\/p>\n

I came to Wright\u2019s poetry late, though I did encounter the
\nEisenhower\/Franco poem (can\u2019t remember the title exactly, and can\u2019t
\nfind the poem) earlier on, and I still remember the thrill of reading it.
\nI saw the Wright poems in your Contemporary American Poetry<\/span> early, too,
\nbut it was much later that I got to his books. Needless to say, he has
\nleft many beautiful poems behind.<\/p>\n

You are quite welcome to compliments about String Too Short To Be
\nSaved.<\/span> And about the poems. I realize now that I did not mention
\nin my letter one of my favorite poems from The Alligator Bride<\/span> \u2013 I
\nmean \u201cMount Kearsage\u201d. Ever since you did your reading at Colby, that
\npoems has stuck with me. I can still hear the way you said its
\nwonderful last line, \u201cblue ghost\u201d. I often think of that poem as I
\ndrift downward towards Crockett\u2019s Corners from Colby and that mountain
\nrises before me.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, I heard not long ago from Fran McCullough, who
\nsent my manuscript back saying she had hoped to publish it with
\nHarper and Row, but now could not and did not expect to be able to \u2013
\nsince it was a first book \u2013 with any of the houses she might join in
\nthe future. I was pleased that she had taken the manuscript seriously
\nenough to advocate its publication, though, obviously, I was
\ndisappointed to have it returned. I do appreciate all your help in
\nbringing the book to her attention. Who knows but before too long
\nyour opinion of the book will be vindicated. Though you have warned
\nme to \u201cexpect nothing\u201d, I can\u2019t help hoping.<\/p>\n

I am beginning to worry that you did not receive a copy of the
\nnew-improved \u201cFat Enter Heaven\u201d, since I have not heard from you
\nabout it. I believe you were off somewhere doing a reading when I
\nsent the copy, so perhaps you never saw it. Anyway, I enclose another
\ncopy for your perusal.<\/p>\n

Diane tells me to say she has finished String<\/span> and loved it.<\/p>\n
