Dear Don,<\/p>\n

Given my tendency toward maudlinity, I do not trust myself to
\nelaborate on the respect and gratitude I feel upon learning of your
\n(and Joey\u2019s) offer to send out my poems. So I will limit my response
\nto a simple thank you, hoping that both you and Joey will know my
\nthank you is most deeply felt.<\/p>\n

You asked me to tell you where the enclosed poems have been sent.
\nAccording to your letter, \u201cHolding the Goat\u201d and \u201cWhen Superman Died\u201d
\nhave been rejected by the New Yorker, Paris Review and Poetry; \u201cGoing
\nBack to Elinore Quelch\u201d has been rejected by the New Yorker, Poetry,
\nParis Review, Atlantic, Virginia Quarterly Review, Harper\u2019s and The
\nNation; and \u201cThe Thin Man\u201d and \u201cHair on Television\u201d have been rejected
\nby the New Yorker. One more thing you should know is that last Monday
\n(having waited three weeks after you wrote to withdraw \u201cHair on
\nTelevision\u201d from editorial consideration) I sent \u201cHair on Television\u201d
\nto American Poetry Review. Should \u201cHair on Television\u201d be returned
\nunpublished, rest assured that I will send it immediately to Joey.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, I wish you would please tell me what percentage
\nof the pay from Poetry Joey should have when my poems are published there.
\nI seem to recollect ten percent, but perhaps it was more\u2026<\/p>\n

In the enclosed batch is a revision of \u201cOld Trees\u201d, which I do
\nhope you like. I have changed the length of the poem\u2019s stanzas from
\ntwo lines to three, and I\u2019ve changed an image that you once questioned.
\nThe poem feels better to me, but I would very much like to have
\nyour response. Would you write me about it when you have a spare moment?<\/p>\n

I still await word from \u201cthe contests\u201d \u2013 the Walt Whitman Award,
\nthe National Poetry Contest, the Yale Younger Poets \u2013 and from the
\nPitt Poetry Series. Don\u2019t know if I told you that Wesleyan rejected
\nthe book. I\u2019m preparing myself for the possible depression of spring!<\/p>\n

In the meantime, I\u2019ve brought a \u201cfive-subject notebook\u201d to
\ncontinue with old poems and new^inprogress. Perhaps I will have more
\nto send soon.<\/p>\n
