Ever since<br \/>\nyour generous recommendation that I be<br \/>\ninvited to read at read at Marietta College, you<br \/>\nhave sustained me as a writer. Your<br \/>\nadvice, your bolstering of my confidence,<br \/>\nhave quite literally kept me going.<br \/>\nThese things are being written,<br \/>\nI\u2019m convinced, somewhere in heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Do you remember the cartoon of<br \/>\nthe two doomed men, deep in the<br \/>\ndungeon, manacled to the wall by<br \/>\nhands and feet, a small window<br \/>\nfar above their heads, one turning<br \/>\nto the other, saying, \u201cNow here\u2019s<br \/>\nmy plan\u201d? Now here\u2019s my plan.<br \/>\nI have consulted my Coda Awards<br \/>\nList booklet and have found that<\/p>\n<p>there are fully five publishers who invite<br \/>\nmanuscripts in the fall. They are: Houghton<br \/>\nMifflin, Wesleyan, U. Illinois, Princeton,<br \/>\nCarnegie Mellon. In addition, there is the<br \/>\nWalt Whitman Award Competition, ending<br \/>\nwith the publication of the winning book<br \/>\nI have decided to mail my book to the five<br \/>\npublishers (or most of them) and to the<br \/>\nWalt Whitman Award Competition, and<br \/>\nto cover myself with telegrams in the<br \/>\nevent of success with one of the above.<br \/>\nBy the fall, I will have improved my<br \/>\nmanuscript (as you suggest) in any<br \/>\nway possible.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think? Specifically, what<br \/>\ndo you think of the inclusion of U.<br \/>\nIllinois, Princeton and Carnegie Mellon<br \/>\n(esp. the last)? Would the book get enough<br \/>\nplay if I were favored with acceptance<br \/>\nat any of these places?<\/p>\n<p>Un million de gracias, as the Chileans<br \/>\nsay, for all your help.
