Dear Wes,<\/p>\n

Well, it\u2019s damned discouraging. You are good!
\nEventually, more than 4 or 5 of us will get the
\nmessage. Many good people have been slow to
\nget published – Frost & Muir for two. Harper
\n& Row is unbearably slow. Of course the letter
\nfrom Ochester is hardly a bad sign – but one
\nneeds more than good signs. I was quick off
\nthe study block, an ambitious & precocious
\nchild – but my first book was rejected 13
\ntimes before acceptance. Jane is going through a
\npatch of getting everything rejected from mags,
\nhaving been lucky earlier. She\u2019s discouraged
\ntoo. I cannot remember if you have ever tried
\nWesleyan. Are you at all interested in a small
\npress? I just had a pamphlet with BOA.<\/p>\n

2\/<\/p>\n

You might try Galassi (Jonathan) at Houghton
\nMifflin in the autumn, saying to J.G. that I
\nasked you to try him. Publishers don\u2019t
\ngenerally accept anything – but some will &
\ndo.<\/p>\n

No reputable agent is
\nuseful to a point. I can explain, if this is
\nobscure. I do use agents – but not for poems.<\/p>\n

The writing – I don\u2019t need to tell you – is
\nwhat matters. Keep getting better, & improve
\nthe mss. every time it comes back, & you
\nwill win through. As Jane & I always
\nquote to each other, from \u201cMary Hartman,\u201d
\n: \u201cTrust me! Trust me!\u201d<\/p>\n
