How the two<br \/>\nof them, noticing steam over the dishpan,<br \/>\ncalled and called. How embarrassed<br \/>\nshe was when they opened the pantry door<br \/>\nat last and found her, looking up at them<br \/>\nbeside her dog, unable to still her heart.<\/p>\n<p>II<\/p>\n<p>The substitute, far off<br \/>\nat the pulpit, asks who<br \/>\nis new today in church,<br \/>\nthen raises his hand.<br \/>\nNobody laughs. It is his voice<br \/>\nthat dazes them, a breezy<br \/>\nlighthearted tone for a joke,<br \/>\nan earnest tone for sympathizing<br \/>\nwith their need, a helpless<br \/>\ntone for asking God<br \/>\nto assist them. Up close<br \/>\nafter the service as they shake<br \/>\nhis hand and look into<br \/>\nhis evasive eye, they see<br \/>\nthe voice is how<br \/>\nhe protects himself from them.<\/p>\n<p>III<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A man&#8217;s property,&#8221; was what he called his three-<br \/>\nacre lot when they complained about the mess,<br \/>\nand he placed one of his junk machines next<br \/>\nto the road where he said neighbors were driving<br \/>\non his lawn. There were just ten years of cutting<br \/>\ndown trees, and dragging a rusty harrow<br \/>\nover the roots, and skinning off topsoil from the hill<br \/>\nto build up the yard, before the house went quiet<br \/>\nand the rumors started. When they saw him<br \/>\nat town meeting, pale, and skinnier than ever,<br \/>\neven his neighbors felt sorry to see the new<br \/>\nlook in his eye which said he had no anger left<br \/>\nabout being a have-not: that he never owned a thing.<\/p>\n<p>IV<\/p>\n<p>If this was all<br \/>\nthere was to winning<br \/>\nthe old farmer&#8217;s praise,<br \/>\nthe boy didn&#8217;t mind<br \/>\ntaking up the grain bag<br \/>\nby the barn post.<br \/>\nIt wasn&#8217;t heavy,<br \/>\nand the newborn kittens<br \/>\nhardly made a sound<br \/>\nas he swung it<br \/>\nand swung it, then<br \/>\nlaid it down still<br \/>\nbetween them, not knowing<br \/>\nhe would never let it go.<\/p>\n<p>V<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPink, and here in the bedroom,<br \/>\nof all places,\u201d the new owners say<br \/>\nto guests touring their house,<br \/>\n\u201cthe plumbing coming up through<br \/>\nthese beautiful wide-board floors,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>where now there is no trace of the toilet<br \/>\nold Frank put in beside Bernice,<br \/>\nwho was by then too sick to get up<br \/>\nfrom her bed and use the flush<br \/>\nshe\u2019d always dreamed of, and woke<\/p>\n<p>sometimes thinking it was a dream,<br \/>\nthis seat above a bowl of water<br \/>\nyou could release with a small, delicate<br \/>\nhandle, right indoors, and called Frank<br \/>\nto make him do it, and said it was beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>VI<\/p>\n<p>When he spoke to neighbors<br \/>\nand friends, casual in his authority,<br \/>\nthe wife mostly listened.<br \/>\n&#8220;You left out the important part,&#8221;<br \/>\nshe would say, while he<br \/>\nbrushed her aside and went on.<br \/>\n&#8220;But that time you took the car<br \/>\nto Canada, I was there with you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When they talked about their dogs,<br \/>\nmale and female terriers, she<br \/>\nwas in charge of the conversation.<br \/>\n&#8220;Sometimes she actually<br \/>\nbites him for ignoring her.<br \/>\nYou should see him follow her<br \/>\naround then. He sleeps with his head<br \/>\ntouching hers, all night long.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>VII<\/p>\n<p>The trouble with Hunts is<br \/>\nthat when they tell about<br \/>\nwhat somebody did<br \/>\nto somebody else you never<br \/>\nknow if the somebody did it<br \/>\nor if the other somebody<br \/>\nor somebody else<br \/>\nentirely did it<br \/>\nor should have done it<br \/>\nor would have, though what it<br \/>\nwas whoever it was did it<br \/>\nwas only something like it<br \/>\nreally was or might have been,<br \/>\nor nothing at all like it,<br \/>\nor just nothing, nothing at all.<\/p>\n<p>VIII<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not so amazing that Francis<br \/>\nhas used his eighty-four-year-<br \/>\nold lungs all morning<br \/>\nto blow a saxophone<\/p>\n<p>with old Cunliffe on the bagpipes,<br \/>\nor that stopping his car<br \/>\nto lean out the window and talk<br \/>\nhe hardly strains the seat belt<\/p>\n<p>his dog ate most of,<br \/>\nor that underneath<br \/>\nits skinny band<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s wearing a Florida shirt<\/p>\n<p>he got out of the clothes closet<br \/>\nin his old house across the road<br \/>\nfrom the new house he moved into<br \/>\ntwelve years back; what&#8217;s amazing<\/p>\n<p>is his ability to tell you all<br \/>\nabout it in give or take one minute,<br \/>\nincluding three or four pauses<br \/>\nwith yups and a good-bye wave.<\/p>\n<p><em>-Wesley McNair<\/em><\/p>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-7208\" data-postid=\"7208\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-7208 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I How shy she became when she saw them outside her kitchen window &#8211; her young, married sister leading the minister&#8217;s wife straight up the front walk.
