If individ-<br \/>\nual men could not transcend their weaknesses and live happily to-<br \/>\ngether, the animals he imagined could.<\/em><br \/>\n\u2014 \u201cAnimals in American Art: Edward Hicks\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mostly they recall nothing. The bear just<br \/>\nnudges the cow and feels foolish<br \/>\nto be wearing claws and the young lion<br \/>\ncontinues on his way with the child. Still<br \/>\nthere are times the leopard remembers.<br \/>\nBehind his tranquil eyes he sees<br \/>\nhimself running somewhere out of his body.<br \/>\nAnd there are times the world lifting his fine<br \/>\nbrown head can hear a scream<br \/>\nthat seems to come from his own throat. Yet<br \/>\nit is quiet here and in the light<br \/>\nbeyond them Penn rises with Indians<br \/>\nas if he were their thought.
