People<br \/>\nroused from<br \/>\nthe sleeping tenement<br \/>\nstand shyly among<br \/>\ntheir valuables:<br \/>\na vacuum<\/p>\n<p>cleaner, somebody\u2019s golden<br \/>\nreclining chair,<br \/>\nblank TV\u2019s.<br \/>\nHope it don\u2019t<br \/>\nburn is<br \/>\nin their eyes.<br \/>\nEverybody here watches<\/p>\n<p>water<br \/>\nfrom two hoses<br \/>\nunravel into the fire<br \/>\nlike string.<br \/>\nThe flames<br \/>\ndo not hurry.<br \/>\nThey belong here,<\/p>\n<p>what the fat<br \/>\nman, tattoo blossoming<br \/>\non his arm,<br \/>\nperhaps knows.<br \/>\nThe great<br \/>\nold roof<br \/>\nis open;<\/p>\n<p>flames<br \/>\ntake the air<br \/>\nlike sails.<br \/>\nSkinny kids<br \/>\nwatch the barn<br \/>\nsink slowly<br \/>\ninto the earth.<\/p>\n<p><em>-Wesley McNair<\/em><\/p>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-3964\" data-postid=\"3964\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-3964 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most days the barn stands across the street from the washette, high empty windows staring into space of another century.
