{"id":3962,"date":"2012-08-16T11:44:49","date_gmt":"2012-08-16T15:44:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/csc-mcnair\/?page_id=3962"},"modified":"2012-08-16T11:44:49","modified_gmt":"2012-08-16T15:44:49","slug":"thinking-about-carnevales-wife","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/csc-mcnair\/thinking-about-carnevales-wife\/","title":{"rendered":"Thinking About Carnevale\u2019s Wife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The only sign<br \/>\nadvertises TIRE   ALE<br \/>\nat Carnevale\u2019s garage.<br \/>\nCarnevale himself<br \/>\nstands under his sign<br \/>\nwhen you drive in,<br \/>\nwaiting for your window<br \/>\nto reach him,<br \/>\nwatching your tires. \u201cHello,<br \/>\nDad,\u201d is what Carnevale says,<br \/>\nhis business way of<br \/>\ndisguising a bad memory.<br \/>\nI picture Carnevale<br \/>\ncalling each of his children<br \/>\n\u201cDad,\u201d there are so many,<br \/>\nthe oldest off fondling<br \/>\ntheir first<br \/>\nused cars, the youngest nearby<br \/>\nplaying with hubcaps.<br \/>\nAnd when the red<br \/>\ngas pump begins to groan<br \/>\nand spin its eye<br \/>\nand Carnevale sings<br \/>\nin his unusually fine<br \/>\ntenor voice about lost love,<br \/>\nI usually think about<br \/>\nCarnevale\u2019s wife.<br \/>\nI have never seen her.<br \/>\nThe open hoods<br \/>\nof cars in the grass<br \/>\noutside her house<br \/>\nutter no clues<br \/>\nabout who\u2019s inside. Sometimes I think<br \/>\nshe listens behind her blinds<br \/>\nto Carnevale singing<br \/>\nwhile he pumps gas\u2014a large woman<br \/>\nwith a combustible<br \/>\nheart.
