{"id":3932,"date":"2012-08-15T17:03:32","date_gmt":"2012-08-15T21:03:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/csc-mcnair\/?page_id=3932"},"modified":"2012-08-15T17:03:44","modified_gmt":"2012-08-15T21:03:44","slug":"illustration","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/csc-mcnair\/illustration\/","title":{"rendered":"Illustration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a bookshelf at the dark living room\u2019s end<br \/>\nstood the ten volumes of <em>Journeys Through Bookland<\/em><br \/>\nwhich my parents bought when I was born.<br \/>\nSometimes when I was alone in the house<\/p>\n<p>\u2013my mother dressed up and pretty, smelling<br \/>\nof Evening in Paris, playing bridge with other ladies<br \/>\nin silk dresses, their words chosen with care,<br \/>\nspeaking of \u201chomes,\u201d speaking of \u201cperspiration\u201d;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013my father adding columns of figures, his #2<br \/>\npencil faint on blue-lined, white paper pads,<br \/>\nsmoking Chesterfields, coughing at his yellow desk<br \/>\nin the job he hated at Brock-Hall;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013and I in the shaded room, back from broken<br \/>\nchalk on blackboards, from duplicate tables<br \/>\nof multiplication, back from geography\u2019s three<br \/>\nimplacable colors, from the murderous schoolyard;<\/p>\n<p>I opened a book to the picture beside Longfellow\u2019s<br \/>\npoem: stark skull recessed in metal cowl,<br \/>\nsockets glaring like eyes, landscape behind it<br \/>\nempty, inhabited only by \u201cThe Skeleton in Armor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>-Donald Hall<\/em><\/p>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-3932\" data-postid=\"3932\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-3932 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a bookshelf at the dark living room\u2019s end stood the ten volumes of Journeys Through Bookland which my parents bought when I was born.
