dog with fuzz
\non top of his head
\nand the young blond one

mustache of black skin
\nunder her unusually
\nbroad nose. She likes
\nto breathe through it<\/p>\n
while mashing it against
\nher rump to bite a flea,
\nor stand on his upside-
\ndown face biting his ears,<\/p>\n
or pass him on her way
\nto bed up the stairs,
\nfor him a mountain
\nof pain. He climbs up<\/p>\n
sideways on his bad leg,
\nlifting it outdoors
\nnext morning as high
\nas he can to pee<\/p>\n
on her pee. Whatever,
\nshe seems to say, off
\nrolling in whatever it was
\novernight that died,<\/p>\n
or maybe chasing her short
\nbent tail, disappearing
\nbehind her except
\nfor a feather of hair. His tail’s<\/p>\n
short too, so waiting for me
\nat the door, she with the bent
\nwag, he with the small,
\njiggling fountain of fur,<\/p>\n
even their sweet mutt joy’s
\nimperfect, not exactly
\nthe dogs I imagine when
\nthey were pups, just them.\n
