We offer several types of archival labs that can be customized to support your pedagogical goals. Archival labs can range from a single class visit to multiple sessions to an embedded class over an entire semester.<\/p>\n
Content-based labs –<\/b> materials connect to the class via time\/topic\/genre\/format; materials can be used as sources of inspiration and exploration to facilitate creative assignments and projects<\/p>\n
Skill-building labs<\/b> – students work with materials regardless of content; often used for research methodology classes that want to incorporate archival research as it applies to a specific discipline<\/p>\n
All labs are hands-on. We encourage students to responsibly handle our materials in order to better comprehend them. We encourage faculty to build assignments and learning activities around our materials. We can work with you to develop active learning ideas to use during the session, and are happy to work with students to come back to Special Collections to work on a project or assignment. <\/p>\n
We also support classes that would like to incorporate a student-curated exhibit as a final project. We are happy to discuss how to scaffold this work throughout the semester.<\/p>\n
If your syllabus schedule is tight, we do go “on the road,” bringing archival materials to your classroom for short presentations. While these encounters with Special Collections may be less effective than archival labs in demonstrating the joys and challenges of archival research, they do acquaint students with the opportunities for original scholarship that our materials offer.<\/p>\n
We strongly encourage individual student research using our collections and we can support a wide range of final presentations, from web sites and performance to the more traditional scholarly paper.<\/p>\n
