Passed that place<br \/>\nand encamped within a mile of the<br \/>\nMonocacy bridge.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Before<\/span> we arrived there we<br \/>\nheard that the enemy were drawn up<br \/>\nin line of battle only a short distance<br \/>\noff, and ready to receive us. Concluded<br \/>\nthat we would ride to the bridge any<br \/>\nway, and Gen. Slocum declared that<br \/>\nhe would \u201cwater his horse in the<br \/>\nMonocacy.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> all reached the Monocacy<br \/>\nwithout any starting event. The General<br \/>\nexpressed a desire to know what name<br \/>\nwas given to the little collection of houses<br \/>\non the opposite bank, and I volunteered<br \/>\nto ride across and see. So taking three<br \/>\norderlies I started over the bridge. I<br \/>\nfound the place was Mill Seat and<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 225:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>the Buckeystown was a little further on.<br \/>\nConcluded to ride to that place. Did<br \/>\nso, and at the corner of one of the houses<br \/>\nI found a collection of citizens standing<br \/>\nby themselves. Upon inquiring with them about<br \/>\nthe rebels one said, \u201ca confederate fired upon<br \/>\nyour men not half an hour since from<br \/>\nthe very spot where you now stand.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">A<\/span> little startled at this I asked \u201cwhere<br \/>\nare the confederate pickets now?\u201d \u201cJust<br \/>\nover to that house\u201d said he \u201cpointing to<br \/>\na building perhaps 200 yards to my<br \/>\nright rear. Immediately sent an orderly<br \/>\nat the fork of the roads to give the<br \/>\nsignal if an enemy approached and<br \/>\nwent on with my questions. But I<br \/>\ndid not stop long. I was soon on<br \/>\nmy way home.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">________,,________<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">I<\/span> shall not soon forget the party<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 226:<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 200px;\">1862<\/span><br \/>\nof negroes who cheered us and welcomed<br \/>\nus so heartily as we rode along. The<br \/>\nscene reminded me of another of<br \/>\nthe same kind as we rode into Cum-<br \/>\nberland on the Pamunkey. The negroes<br \/>\nthen received us with singing and<br \/>\ndancing.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">13th<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">A<\/span> good deal of firing this morning.<br \/>\nOur Division marches at 9 o.k. a.m.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">_______,,_______<\/span><br \/>\nArrived at Carroll\u2019s Manor and encamped<br \/>\nfor the night.
