Ordered<\/span> to move this morning
\non the Urbana road. Passed that place
\nand encamped within a mile of the
\nMonocacy bridge.
\nBefore<\/span> we arrived there we
\nheard that the enemy were drawn up
\nin line of battle only a short distance
\noff, and ready to receive us. Concluded
\nthat we would ride to the bridge any
\nway, and Gen. Slocum declared that
\nhe would \u201cwater his horse in the
\nMonocacy.\u201d
\nWe<\/span> all reached the Monocacy
\nwithout any starting event. The General
\nexpressed a desire to know what name
\nwas given to the little collection of houses
\non the opposite bank, and I volunteered
\nto ride across and see. So taking three
\norderlies I started over the bridge. I
\nfound the place was Mill Seat and<\/p>\n

the Buckeystown was a little further on.
\nConcluded to ride to that place. Did
\nso, and at the corner of one of the houses
\nI found a collection of citizens standing
\nby themselves. Upon inquiring with them about
\nthe rebels one said, \u201ca confederate fired upon
\nyour men not half an hour since from
\nthe very spot where you now stand.
\nA<\/span> little startled at this I asked \u201cwhere
\nare the confederate pickets now?\u201d \u201cJust
\nover to that house\u201d said he \u201cpointing to
\na building perhaps 200 yards to my
\nright rear. Immediately sent an orderly
\nat the fork of the roads to give the
\nsignal if an enemy approached and
\nwent on with my questions. But I
\ndid not stop long. I was soon on
\nmy way home.<\/p>\n

\nus so heartily as we rode along. The
\nscene reminded me of another of
\nthe same kind as we rode into Cum-
\nberland on the Pamunkey. The negroes
\nthen received us with singing and
