Smith.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">30<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Received<\/span> the march today.<br \/>\nJust as we passed Fairfax C.H.<br \/>\nthe General sent me forward to obtain<br \/>\nall information possible relative to<br \/>\nthe fighting of yesterday the events<br \/>\nof today and our present line of battle.<br \/>\nCould learn nothing of Gen. Butterfield<br \/>\nwho with other portions of Gen. Porter\u2019s<br \/>\ncorps arrived at Centerville about the<br \/>\nsame time as myself. Went to<br \/>\nPope\u2019s head quarters. No one there.<br \/>\nAfterward saw Gen. Griffin, who could<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 210:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>tell me nothing. Then road [sic] up to Warrenton<br \/>\nPike to see for myself. Met Gen. Sturges<br \/>\nand talked with one of his aids but<br \/>\nlearned nothing.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">After<\/span> passing Cub Run met a<br \/>\ngentleman who was serving as an<br \/>\nengineer on Gen. McDowell\u2019s staff,<br \/>\nand who told me much that was<br \/>\ninteresting.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Rode<\/span> back to Centerville and<br \/>\nthere saw 350 Rebel prisoners near Pope\u2019s<br \/>\nhead quarters, good looking men but<br \/>\npoorly clothed. Shortly after met<br \/>\nthe division coming up. The orders<br \/>\nwere for us to push on up the<br \/>\nWarrenton Pike. The march was<br \/>\naccordingly continued until we<br \/>\narrived a mile beyond Cub Run.<br \/>\nThere our division halted for a<br \/>\nrest.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Gen.<\/span> Slocum and a few others,<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 211:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>among them myself, went into a<br \/>\ndoor yard near by and sat down.<br \/>\nWe had not been there five minutes<br \/>\nbefore our attention was drawn to a<br \/>\nlarge open space of country on the<br \/>\nleft of our position across which<br \/>\ntroops seemed to be moving, not in<br \/>\norder but confused and straggling like.<br \/>\nThe more carefully we observed the<br \/>\nmove it looked like a general<br \/>\nfalling back of our troops. And soon<br \/>\nenough it was. Our left had been<br \/>\nturned. In half an hour our army<br \/>\nwas pouring down the Warrenton Pike.<br \/>\nBatt\u2019y D went into position on the left<br \/>\nof the Pike supported by our infantry.<br \/>\nThe stream poured by for over an hour<br \/>\nand then we fell back in order to<br \/>\nCenterville.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Wolcotts<\/span> battery and the 2nd Brig.<br \/>\nremained on the further side of Cub<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 212:<\/p>\n<p>Run all night. Gen. S. + staff returned to<br \/>\nCenterville with the remainder of the division.<br \/>\nTried to sleep but couldn\u2019t. Too wet, too<br \/>\nhungry, too tired.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">31st<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">This<\/span> morning woke early and<br \/>\nenjoyed a fine cup of coffee made<br \/>\nby our orderlies, fine fellows from the<br \/>\n2nd. Regular Cavalry. It began to<br \/>\nrain and because Gen. Newton lost<br \/>\nmy poncho I got wet through. No<br \/>\nmatter. Soon mounted and rode to<br \/>\nthe front with Gen. Slocum. Passed<br \/>\nbeyond Cub Run to the battery that<br \/>\nhad been in position all night, and<br \/>\nmade arrangements to retire to<br \/>\nCenterville. After the battery and<br \/>\nsupport had crossed the Run, I<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 213:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>superintended the destruction of the<br \/>\nbridge.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> went into position on the<br \/>\ncrest of the hill just this side. While<br \/>\nthere I observed the skirmishing of our<br \/>\nCavalry pickets as they advanced and<br \/>\nit was a beautiful sight. The enemy<br \/>\nretired and I could distinctly see them<br \/>\nas they passed across the road on the<br \/>\ntop of the opposite hill. Soon they posted<br \/>\na gun on the pike and sent a<br \/>\nfew shell at us. A battery was got<br \/>\ninto position and replied.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Meanwhile<\/span> we retired to Cen-<br \/>\nterville and the 2nd. Brigade took up<br \/>\nposition on the left of the work<br \/>\noccupied by the troops of Gen. Newton.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Visited<\/span> Gen. Pope\u2019s head quarters. Saw, beside him, Heintzelman and Sumner.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Joe<\/span> got us some bread, ham,<br \/>\nand coffee.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 214:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Opinion<\/span> is general that the enemy<br \/>\nhave gone round our right flank, and<br \/>\nthat it is utter folly for us to remain<br \/>\nhere.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Rodgers<\/span> is sick and has gone to<br \/>\nWashington.
