\nThis<\/span> is the Bull Run Sunday\u2014counting
\nthe sabbaths [sic] and a year ago today we were
\nhaving a hot time\u2014my position has
\nchanged since then.

\nGenl.<\/span> Slocum\u2019s letter to Stanton
\nabout Fitz John\u2019s Generalship on the 27th
\nult [?] is strong and scathing. Wead
\nthinks the General will be challenged for
\nit, whereat the Genl. declares he will
\naccept although he don\u2019t believe in such
\nthings. He evidently feels the loss of his
\n2,000. And I don\u2019t blame him.
\n_________,,_________<\/span>Yesterday<\/span> sent off four letters to different
\npersons. Today have written Charles.<\/p>\n

I<\/span> learn that the people of Maine
\nare beginning to wake up to the importance
\nof the crisis. Sometimes it has seemed
\nto us as though they were much
\ninterested in the success of our troops
\nas though it made no difference to
\nthem whether our small but courageous
\nband all perished in the trenches before
\nRichmond, or victoriously won the city. Orators
\ntrumpet-tongued and eloquent ascend the
\nrostrum and boastfully assure the people
\nthat their resources are more than adequate
\nto the small task of suppressing this cruel
\nrebellion, that their foe is weak in number
\nin resources and in courage, and that ere
\nmany months have elapsed the rebellion
\nwill be forever crushed. The people go away
\npuffed up with pride and conceit.
\nFull of confidence they resume their
\ncustomary avocations, gracefully receiving<\/p>\n

\nthe apologetic explanations of their incompetent
\nleaders whenever the army unfortunately
\nmeets with a reverse. Nothing but an
\noverwhelming defeat it seems to me can
\never wake up our people fully to the
\nimportance of the present crisis.

\nOh<\/span> my deluded country men! Would
\nthat you could realize the degree of
\nsacrifice that is being endured daily
\nby your implacable, wicked though
\nenergetic foe. See with what fierce des-
\nperation and wild enthusiasm they
\nall bend themselves to the task of
\ndriving you back. Would that you
\nmight copy them in these respects.
\nWhen<\/span> will all this end? When
\nwill activity give place to vigor\u2014and
\na spiritless indecisive course to one
\nof energy and decision?<\/p>\n
