Wead<br \/>\nthinks the General will be challenged for<br \/>\nit, whereat the Genl. declares he will<br \/>\naccept although he don\u2019t believe in such<br \/>\nthings. He evidently feels the loss of his<br \/>\n2,000. And I don\u2019t blame him.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">_________,,_________<\/span><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Yesterday<\/span> sent off four letters to different<br \/>\npersons. Today have written Charles.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 188[a]:<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">July<\/span> <span style=\"margin-left: 88px;\">1862<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">I<\/span> learn that the people of Maine<br \/>\nare beginning to wake up to the importance<br \/>\nof the crisis. Sometimes it has seemed<br \/>\nto us as though they were much<br \/>\ninterested in the success of our troops<br \/>\nas though it made no difference to<br \/>\nthem whether our small but courageous<br \/>\nband all perished in the trenches before<br \/>\nRichmond, or victoriously won the city. Orators<br \/>\ntrumpet-tongued and eloquent ascend the<br \/>\nrostrum and boastfully assure the people<br \/>\nthat their resources are more than adequate<br \/>\nto the small task of suppressing this cruel<br \/>\nrebellion, that their foe is weak in number<br \/>\nin resources and in courage, and that ere<br \/>\nmany months have elapsed the rebellion<br \/>\nwill be forever crushed. The people go away<br \/>\npuffed up with pride and conceit.<br \/>\nFull of confidence they resume their<br \/>\ncustomary avocations, gracefully receiving<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 189[a]:<br \/>\n1862 <span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">July<\/span><br \/>\nthe apologetic explanations of their incompetent<br \/>\nleaders whenever the army unfortunately<br \/>\nmeets with a reverse. Nothing but an<br \/>\noverwhelming defeat it seems to me can<br \/>\never wake up our people fully to the<br \/>\nimportance of the present crisis.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">_________,,_________<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Oh<\/span> my deluded country men! Would<br \/>\nthat you could realize the degree of<br \/>\nsacrifice that is being endured daily<br \/>\nby your implacable, wicked though<br \/>\nenergetic foe. See with what fierce des-<br \/>\nperation and wild enthusiasm they<br \/>\nall bend themselves to the task of<br \/>\ndriving you back. Would that you<br \/>\nmight copy them in these respects.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">When<\/span> will all this end?
