There was Lt. Col.<br \/>\nMarsh with his severe wound<br \/>\nthrough the neck and who<br \/>\nrecognized me at once. Col. Pratt,<br \/>\nCapt. Stevens, Lieut. Atwood and<br \/>\nLt. Lemont. Contd.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Rumor<\/span> was that the enemy<br \/>\nwere on our heels and that our<br \/>\ndeparture must be hastened. So<br \/>\nambulances were hurried off. Stores<br \/>\nthat could not be transported<br \/>\nwere destroyed, and the troops<br \/>\ngot into position on the surrounding<br \/>\nhills for defense. Gradually the<br \/>\nvast plain was cleaned and the<br \/>\nvarious columns of troops moved<br \/>\nforward. The baggage trains<br \/>\nwere unaccountably long, and<br \/>\nthe babbling of teamsters was<br \/>\nindescribable. The halts were<br \/>\nso long and frequent that<br \/>\nI was ready to despair of our<br \/>\never getting through.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Having<\/span> seen our division<br \/>\noff I pushed on to the head of<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 170:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>the column in search of the<br \/>\nGeneral whom I found busily<br \/>\nat work cleaning the roads<br \/>\nand directing the trains.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> halted for a short<br \/>\nrest I know not where but it<br \/>\nwas at a house where were<br \/>\nthe temporary head quarters of<br \/>\nGenl. McClellan. Here we had a<br \/>\nlittle sleep from which we<br \/>\nwere soon aroused by the<br \/>\ncry of \u201cDivision under arms.\u201d<br \/>\nThe troops were hurried into<br \/>\nposition and batteries planted<br \/>\nand the trains moved on. But<br \/>\nthis proved only to be a stampede.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">About<\/span> sundown we<br \/>\nreached Genl. Peck\u2019s head quarter\u2019s [sic].<br \/>\nHis troops we at once relieved. Here<br \/>\nI met Maj. Robie who begged me<br \/>\nto let him have a little of my<br \/>\nclaret.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 171:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Here we met Genl. McClellan<br \/>\nagain and his staff\u2014my lemons<br \/>\nwere of great service in assuaging<br \/>\nthe thirst of several wounded<br \/>\nones among whom I noticed<br \/>\na little drummer boy. What<br \/>\ngroans from the poor sick<br \/>\nand wounded!<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> laid down to sleep<br \/>\nearly but did not sleep long, for<br \/>\nthe constant interruptions. The<br \/>\nGeneral was so fatigued that<br \/>\nhe dropped to sleep at once and<br \/>\ncould not even be aroused when<br \/>\nCol. Torbert [?] came to learn what<br \/>\nbridge he was to destroy. Then<br \/>\nthe General would talk incoherently<br \/>\nabout Bottom\u2019s bridge.
