A portion of our division<br \/>\nhas been heavily engaged in<br \/>\nslashing the woods in front<br \/>\nAnd the next has gone up<br \/>\nto Smith\u2019s works.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>1 ok p.m.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 88px;\">About<\/span> noon today<br \/>\nCol. Alexander rode up to our<br \/>\nhead quarters and informed<br \/>\nGenl. Slocum [<em>carrot<\/em>: that he] was about to<br \/>\ncommence shelling the enemy<br \/>\nand that we had better move<br \/>\nback as their replies would<br \/>\nprobably fall near by.<br \/>\nWe at once retired to<br \/>\nthe woods in the rear and<br \/>\nselected a new camp for<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 167:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>head quarters and had our<br \/>\ntents pitched, meanwhile the<br \/>\nshelling <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">going on<\/span> very briskly.<br \/>\nToward the middle of the<br \/>\nafternoon, however, it ceased,<br \/>\nand we managed to get a<br \/>\nlittle sleep and eat supper.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">After<\/span> supper orders came<br \/>\nfor the division [<em>carrot<\/em>: to be ready] to move at a<br \/>\nmoment\u2019s notice, and to have<br \/>\neverything destroyed which could<br \/>\nnot be carried.
