The negroes<br \/>\nand country people report us distant<br \/>\nabout seven miles from Richmond.<br \/>\nWe reached here two days since after<br \/>\na most tedious march. We sent out<br \/>\na reconnoitering [sic] party yesterday and<br \/>\nobtained most important information<br \/>\nconcerning the enemy, and their probable<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 136:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>force on the other side of the Chickahominy.<br \/>\nThere are various opinions held, some thinking<br \/>\nthe enemy to be in large numbers, and some<br \/>\nnot.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">But<\/span> the natural question is constantly<br \/>\nbeing asked, where are the enemy? It is<br \/>\ncertainly surprising that we are permitted<br \/>\nto approach so near to Richmond unmolested.<br \/>\nIf the enemy intend to defend the line<br \/>\nof the Chickahominy why have two whole<br \/>\ncorps of the army been allowed to cross<br \/>\nat Bottom\u2019s Bridge? There must be at<br \/>\nleast 50,000 of our troops on the other side of the Chickahominy today.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Two<\/span> days since and we were<br \/>\nmuch disturbed about our right, fearing<br \/>\nlest the enemy should attack us in<br \/>\nthat quarter and from the rear. But<br \/>\nCapt.
