The enemy<br \/>\nwas going on and immediately<br \/>\nour gun boats opened upon<br \/>\nthem.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">So<\/span> soon as a few<br \/>\ncompanies had been landed<br \/>\nthey were deployed as skirmishes [?]<br \/>\nTwo prisoners were brought in<br \/>\njust after dark. Some firing<br \/>\nalso was heard, and we lost<br \/>\nan officer killed. These prisoners<br \/>\nwere carried to Genl. Franklin<br \/>\nfor examination and afterward<br \/>\nconfined on board of the<br \/>\nSpaulding. Some contrabands<br \/>\nwere brought in reporting that<br \/>\na large force of the enemy<br \/>\nwas near by [sic]. So the troops were<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 123:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>hurried off as rapidly as possible.<br \/>\nGenl. Newton\u2019s first, then Slocum\u2019s and<br \/>\nthen Col. Taylor\u2019s. It was late in the<br \/>\nnight when all got off. The batteries<br \/>\nwere got off just at day break.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> were in no condition to<br \/>\npush forward at once. So parties<br \/>\nwere sent out to block up the<br \/>\napproaches to our position. Toward<br \/>\nmorning Report came that the<br \/>\nenemy were removing these ob-<br \/>\nstructions. This looked like an<br \/>\nattack on us. So we began to<br \/>\nredouble our efforts to be ready<br \/>\nfor them. Genl. Franklin hurried<br \/>\nashore to consult with Slocum<br \/>\nand Newton. He expected the<br \/>\nattack would commence about<br \/>\nfour o\u2019clock in the morning but<br \/>\nthat time passed and still<br \/>\nno disturbance excepting a few<br \/>\nrandom picket shots.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 124:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>So soon as it was fully day<br \/>\nbreak I laid down to sleep,<br \/>\nand awoke at about half<br \/>\nafter nine, I should judge.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">A<\/span> little while after I was<br \/>\nstanding in my tent when I<br \/>\nheard a few discharges of musketry &#8211;<br \/>\nthen a few more\u2014and finally it<br \/>\nbecame a continuous dropping<br \/>\nfire, lasting for perhaps three minutes.<br \/>\nThen it ceased entirely. The General<br \/>\nwas soon aroused. We thought<br \/>\nit to be a general attack on our pickets.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Pretty<\/span> soon it commenced<br \/>\nagain along our entire line, when<br \/>\n, the general, being in command,<br \/>\nordered the disposition of our<br \/>\ntroops for battle. This made lively<br \/>\nwork for us on the staff.<br \/>\nAbout quarter past ten<br \/>\nthe ball [?] opened. The regiments<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 125:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>in advance gradually moved up<br \/>\nto support the skirmishing line<br \/>\nand soon were in the woods. Our<br \/>\nbatteries were posted with Platt\u2019s<br \/>\non the right, Porter\u2019s in the center,<br \/>\nand Hexeimer\u2019s [?] on the left. We<br \/>\nhad a telegraph of sentinels running<br \/>\nfrom the main hospital to the<br \/>\nfront, and over it came every<br \/>\nlittle while the expressions:-<br \/>\n\u201cour pickets retreating\u201d, \u201cThe enemy<br \/>\nadvancing\u201d, \u201cheavy vollies at<br \/>\nclose action,\u201d +c. +c.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">The<\/span> fight continued<br \/>\nuntil about two when the<br \/>\nenemy had approached much<br \/>\nnearer. Porter\u2019s battery was<br \/>\nordered to throw shell into<br \/>\nthe woods. The enemy replied<br \/>\nwith their artillery, firing some<br \/>\nshot at the gunboats. They<br \/>\nresponded at once sending<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 126:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>their 9 inch and 11 inch shell<br \/>\nshrieking through the air. The<br \/>\nfiring of the musketry though<br \/>\ncontinued grew fainter and<br \/>\nfainter until it entirely ceased<br \/>\nto be heard. The enemy were<br \/>\nfalling back.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">It<\/span> was now about three<br \/>\no\u2019clock p.m., and the wounded<br \/>\nwere being rapidly brought in.<br \/>\nHexeimer\u2019s battery a short time<br \/>\nafter were ordered to shell the<br \/>\nwoods on our left and that<br \/>\nended the day\u2019s work.
