\nnight before last and commenced
\ndebarkation at once. The enemy
\nwas going on and immediately
\nour gun boats opened upon
\nthem.

\ncompanies had been landed
\nthey were deployed as skirmishes [?]
\nTwo prisoners were brought in
\njust after dark. Some firing
\nalso was heard, and we lost
\nan officer killed. These prisoners
\nwere carried to Genl. Franklin
\nfor examination and afterward
\nconfined on board of the
\nSpaulding. Some contrabands
\nwere brought in reporting that
\na large force of the enemy

hurried off as rapidly as possible.
\nGenl. Newton\u2019s first, then Slocum\u2019s and
\nthen Col. Taylor\u2019s. It was late in the
\nnight when all got off. The batteries
\nwere got off just at day break.
\nWe<\/span> were in no condition to
\npush forward at once. So parties
\nwere sent out to block up the
\napproaches to our position. Toward
\nmorning Report came that the
\nenemy were removing these ob-
\nstructions. This looked like an
\nattack on us. So we began to
\nredouble our efforts to be ready
\nfor them. Genl. Franklin hurried
\nashore to consult with Slocum
\nand Newton. He expected the
\nattack would commence about
\nfour o\u2019clock in the morning but
\nthat time passed and still
\nno disturbance excepting a few
\nrandom picket shots.<\/p>\n

So soon as it was fully day
\nbreak I laid down to sleep,
\nand awoke at about half
\nafter nine, I should judge.
\nA<\/span> little while after I was
\nstanding in my tent when I
\nheard a few discharges of musketry –
\nthen a few more\u2014and finally it
\nbecame a continuous dropping
\nfire, lasting for perhaps three minutes.
\nThen it ceased entirely. The General
\nwas soon aroused. We thought
\nit to be a general attack on our pickets.
\nPretty<\/span> soon it commenced
\nagain along our entire line, when
\n, the general, being in command,
\nordered the disposition of our
\ntroops for battle. This made lively
\nwork for us on the staff.

\nand soon were in the woods. Our
\nbatteries were posted with Platt\u2019s
\non the right, Porter\u2019s in the center,
\nand Hexeimer\u2019s [?] on the left. We
\nhad a telegraph of sentinels running
\nfrom the main hospital to the
\nfront, and over it came every
\nlittle while the expressions:-
\n\u201cour pickets retreating\u201d, \u201cThe enemy
\nadvancing\u201d, \u201cheavy vollies at
\nclose action,\u201d +c. +c.
\nThe<\/span> fight continued
\nuntil about two when the
\nenemy had approached much
\nnearer. Porter\u2019s battery was
\nordered to throw shell into
\nthe woods. The enemy replied
\nwith their artillery, firing some
\nshot at the gunboats. They
\nresponded at once sending<\/p>\n

their 9 inch and 11 inch shell
\nshrieking through the air. The
\nfiring of the musketry though
\ncontinued grew fainter and
\nfainter until it entirely ceased
\nto be heard. The enemy were
\nfalling back.
\nIt<\/span> was now about three
\no\u2019clock p.m., and the wounded
\nwere being rapidly brought in.
\nHexeimer\u2019s battery a short time
\nafter were ordered to shell the
\nwoods on our left and that
\nended the day\u2019s work. We cannot
\nestimate accurately of course as
\nto the number lost but some say
\n100, others 200, and some even more.
\nJimmie<\/span> behaved very well, but
\nsays that he was in a hot
\nplace several times.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n
