McClellan<br \/>\ncommanded in person. Kearney<br \/>\nis said not to have handled<br \/>\nhis division with much skill, and<br \/>\non the whole the battle was a<br \/>\ndrawn one. I have no doubt the<br \/>\nenemy will magnify it into a<br \/>\n\u201crepulse of the enemy\u201d and appear<br \/>\nmuch elated. But as sure as the<br \/>\nsun shines Richmond must fall.<br \/>\nOur division steams up to West<br \/>\nPoint day where we shall land and<br \/>\nentrench ourselves. Thus we begin<br \/>\nthe investment of the rebel capitol.<br \/>\nMeanwhile McDowell is safe and<br \/>\nwill hurry up to join us in the<br \/>\ngrand strike. Banks is coming down<br \/>\nand will join us.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 121:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>The steamers that have come<br \/>\nup to serve as hospitals are<br \/>\nfast filling up. I should not<br \/>\nbe surprised if we had a<br \/>\nthousand wounded.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">A<\/span> week since the Rebel<br \/>\ncongress were beginning to leave<br \/>\nthe capital in terror. The papers<br \/>\nridiculed them for cowardice.<br \/>\nBut when news came of the<br \/>\nevacuation of Yorktown it must<br \/>\nhave startled the inhabitants.<br \/>\nMany suppose that they are beginning<br \/>\nto leave Richmond now, and<br \/>\nthat the opposition yesterday<br \/>\nat Williamsburg was only to<br \/>\ngain time.
