Col. Howland<br \/>\nand his lady accompany us.Ship Point <span style=\"margin-left: 38px;\">2.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> returned from Fortress<br \/>\nMunroe this morning. Yesterday so far<br \/>\nas sight seeing [sic] goes was the pleasantest<br \/>\nand most interesting May day that<br \/>\nI ever passed. We visited the Fortress<br \/>\nwere introduced to Genl. Wools a. a. G. +<br \/>\nexamined the water battery. This is<br \/>\na most formidable structure and it<br \/>\nfills one with awe to contemplate<br \/>\nit. I was reminded of the collection<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 111:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>of statuary that would be seen<br \/>\nby entering the halls of some old<br \/>\nEnglish castle\u2014tall knights encased<br \/>\nin their steel armors standing in<br \/>\nlong rows up and down the hall<br \/>\nmotionless, grim and silent. It<br \/>\nis surely a sight worth seeing. For<br \/>\nthe first time I understood the meaning<br \/>\nof casemate.[?]<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Passing<\/span> round this battery<br \/>\nat the right we come in sight of<br \/>\nthe celebrated Union and Lincoln<br \/>\nguns that are mounted very near<br \/>\nthe water\u2019s edge. These are perfectly<br \/>\nastounding. No idea can be formed<br \/>\nof them without seeing. Weighing<br \/>\n50,000 lbs and throwing a ball that<br \/>\nweighs 432 lbs these twin monsters<br \/>\nstand alone and beyond everything<br \/>\nwe have. They may soon be excelled,<br \/>\nand it would not surprise us<br \/>\nif they were; for the science of<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 112:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>projectiles is making rapid strides.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Returning<\/span> to the Fortress I pick<br \/>\na few buttercups and wander off<br \/>\nto the entrance gate. Twenty minutes<br \/>\nafterward I was on board of the Spaulding enjoying the felicity of a bath. Col.<br \/>\nHowland\u2019s candy had given me a<br \/>\nsevere headache. A little sleep however<br \/>\nprepared me for dinner, when it was<br \/>\ndecided how to spend the afternoon.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">&#8220;How<\/span> many can your sail-<br \/>\nboat carry\u201d said I to the 1st. mate of<br \/>\nthe S. R. Spaulding after dinner. \u201cOh! a<br \/>\ndozen\u201d was his reply. Fifteen minutes<br \/>\nafterward and our little party were<br \/>\ntossing over the waves toward that-now-<br \/>\n-all-engaging-wonder of the world\u2014the<br \/>\nMonitor. The curiosity of every one [sic]<br \/>\nwas aroused. We were going to visit<br \/>\nthe Monitor. And to us that was<br \/>\npleasure enough to cancel a life-time<br \/>\nof discomfort.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 113:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>We were not long in reaching her<br \/>\niron sides. The officers gave us a<br \/>\nhearty welcome and seemed to take<br \/>\nthe highest pleasure in explaining.<br \/>\nOur attention was first called to the<br \/>\nTurret, + the eight plates of thickness a<br \/>\nsection of which could be most<br \/>\nplainly seen at the port holes.<br \/>\nWe observed the effect of the shot which<br \/>\nshe received in her encounter with<br \/>\nthe Merrimac. There was a dent<br \/>\nmade by a hundred pound shot<br \/>\nat the distance of five yards. Can<br \/>\nit be possible? Here we see the<br \/>\neffect of a ricochet shot that tore up<br \/>\nthe edge of the plates. Here is another<br \/>\npartly below water line. That is the<br \/>\nPilot House and those are the two<br \/>\nholes for sight. So it was there that<br \/>\nLieut. Worden received the injury to<br \/>\nhis eyes, that came near depriving us of<br \/>\none of our most valuable officers.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 114:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Imagine a low square box made of<br \/>\neight inch joice [?] and these joice [?] solid<br \/>\niron and there you may get an idea<br \/>\nof the massive weight and strength<br \/>\nof the Pilot house. Since the fight<br \/>\nwith the Merrimac they have made<br \/>\nit even stronger by means of an iron<br \/>\nplated support that extends all around.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">The<\/span> Turret and Pilot House<br \/>\nare all that attract ones [sic] attention<br \/>\nabove deck, if we except the little<br \/>\ninsignificant smoke stack; and so having<br \/>\nseen these we follow the officer below.<br \/>\nA descent of several steps, and we<br \/>\nare in the midst of the ship\u2019s crew<br \/>\nsome sitting unengaged, + others sewing<br \/>\nor reading\u2014but all very quiet. Passing<br \/>\nto the left through this group we enter<br \/>\nthe Turret, by ascending another flight<br \/>\nof steps.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">The<\/span> engineer first calls our<br \/>\nattention to the revolving of the Turret.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 115:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>He pushed a lever forward pretty much as<br \/>\nan engineer does on board one of<br \/>\nour locomotives, and immediately a<br \/>\nlow continual rumbling begins. We are<br \/>\nunconscious of motion\u2014cannot realize<br \/>\nit till, as directed, we sight along one<br \/>\nof the splendid hundred pounders through<br \/>\nthe port hole and then we \u201csee it.\u201d The<br \/>\nwhole horizon is swept entirely around<br \/>\nand every object passes swiftly before<br \/>\nus. The officer explained the manner<br \/>\nof working the guns. So soon as one<br \/>\nwas discharged the Turret was made<br \/>\nto revolve away from the enemy<br \/>\nand so the gunners were unexposed<br \/>\nin loading.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">I<\/span> never saw more splendid<br \/>\nguns than these hundred pounders.<br \/>\nWhile in the Turret I spoke with<br \/>\nthe seaman on duty there and he<br \/>\ngave me a piece of the timber of<br \/>\nthe Monitor for a souvenir. Also one<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 116:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>of the caps used in discharging the pieces.<br \/>\nI am preserving them carefully as relics<br \/>\nof the war.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Passing<\/span> from the Turret below again,<br \/>\nthe officer carries us into the cabin, which<br \/>\nwe find to be the most splendidly furnished.<br \/>\nFrom there we go into the Pilot House and<br \/>\nsee where the helmsman has to stand. Beneath<br \/>\nthe Pilot House are arrangements for<br \/>\nraising the anchor.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Leaving<\/span> the Monitor we visited<br \/>\nthe Galena where Capt.
