Murphy\u2019s horses was shot about four<br \/>\nmiles from our camp + today a squad of<br \/>\nmen went in search of the body as<br \/>\nhe was a good soldier and had been<br \/>\nin the service 16 years.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Genl.<\/span> Franklin and staff called<br \/>\nupon us about an hour since. We shall<br \/>\nmarch tomorrow morning at seven<br \/>\no\u2019clock toward Bristoe and Warrenton.<br \/>\nToday I am of the impression that the<br \/>\nenemy do not intend making a stand<br \/>\nin Virginia. Dr. Gillespie our Refugee<br \/>\nfriend says that parties of Unionists<br \/>\nhave fled to the mountains to avoid<br \/>\nconscription and that they are anxious<br \/>\nto join Banks army.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Genl.<\/span> Wool in his dispatch, this<br \/>\nmornings paper, says that he does<br \/>\nnot think we will find an<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>[Page 84:]<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>enemy to contend with in Virginia.<br \/>\n7p.m.\u2014This evening I returned from<br \/>\na long ride. Immediately after<br \/>\ndinner the General started out with<br \/>\nhis staff on a reconnoitreing [sic] expedition.<br \/>\nOur object was to find the best road<br \/>\nleading to Bristoe which place we<br \/>\nvisited.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">After<\/span> returning to camp I<br \/>\nstarted out alone to visit Bull<br \/>\nRun. Having reached Manassas<br \/>\nJunction I called at a house and<br \/>\ninquired the way to the battle field<br \/>\nThe negro showed me and explained<br \/>\nthe situation. I took down a sketch<br \/>\nof it and then rode off with three<br \/>\nof the Maine Cavalry. We however<br \/>\ndid not succeed through mistaking<br \/>\nthe road, and so had to return. I<br \/>\ntook the cavalry with me because I<br \/>\ndid not expect to get back before<br \/>\ntonight and it is very dangerous<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>[Page 85:]<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>travelling through these woods after<br \/>\ndark.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">April<\/span> 8<br \/>\nCatlett\u2019s station<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> marched out of<br \/>\nour encampment yesterday morning<br \/>\nat 7 o\u2019clock. We made a road of<br \/>\nour own as we went along, and<br \/>\nthe pioneers had considerable<br \/>\nwork to do in filling up the ditches.<br \/>\nWe passed through Bristoe [?] [<em>carrot<\/em>: at] not<br \/>\nfar from nine o\u2019clock a.m., <em>where<\/em><br \/>\nwe made a short halt. General<br \/>\nS. and staff called at Gen. Newton\u2019s<br \/>\nhead quarters and we had a<br \/>\nfine time over the state of things.<br \/>\nGenl. Newton was very indignant<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>[Page 86:]<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>at the arrangement which had<br \/>\nrecently been made putting us<br \/>\nunder McDowell. Waldron after<br \/>\nlistening a long time to the tirade<br \/>\nagainst our leaders turned the<br \/>\nconversation suddenly by one of<br \/>\nhis inimitable remarks\u2014\u201cno matter,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid he, \u201cthe pay goes on just the<br \/>\nsame. That\u2019s our consolation.\u201d\u2014This<br \/>\nbrought on the laugh. \u201cColonel\u201d, says<br \/>\nhe, \u201chave you brought your fishing<br \/>\ntackle\u201d? \u201cOur song has changed<br \/>\n\u201cO we\u2019re going [<em>carrot<\/em>: going a] fishing.\u201d<br \/>\ninstead of<br \/>\nO we\u2019re going down to Richmond.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">* * * *<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">About<\/span> one o\u2019clock p.m. we made<br \/>\nour second halt and lunched in<br \/>\nthe woods. At half past two p.m.<br \/>\nwe reached Catlett\u2019s station and im-<br \/>\nmediately set about finding a<br \/>\nplace for head quarters and<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>[Page 87:]<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>deciding upon camp grounds.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Genl.<\/span> Kearny came here yesterday<br \/>\nand seems to have monopolized<br \/>\neverything in the shape of building<br \/>\nand shelter. After long searching however<br \/>\nwe found a store which was at<br \/>\nonce made head quarters for Genl<br \/>\nand staff. We did not make<br \/>\nmuch ceremony but bunked down<br \/>\nat once. I think I slept three<br \/>\nor four hours before the rest turned<br \/>\nin and when I woke up Wead<br \/>\nand Rodgers were discussing the<br \/>\nmerits and utility of 12 foot<br \/>\ndrivers on the rail road. They were<br \/>\njust turning in, and so I rolled<br \/>\nover and tried it again. Five<br \/>\nof us slept on the counter.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">During<\/span> the night Wead fell<br \/>\noff the counter and woke us all<br \/>\nup by the noise. John Manassas<br \/>\ntoo, came about midnight without<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>[Page 88:]<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>the cow telling a most pitiful<br \/>\nstory about \u201chorses and horse<br \/>\npistols and his comb and<br \/>\ndollar and half.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">This<\/span> morning Joe gave us<br \/>\nand excellent breakfast, but it<br \/>\nstill rains and so it is quite<br \/>\nuncomfortable. We have tried to<br \/>\nsing a little but it does not<br \/>\nseem to be \u201cappropos\u201d. [sic]<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">List<\/span> of casualties to the<br \/>\nstaff of Genl. Slocum during<br \/>\nthe past 36 hours.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">1.<\/span> Dr. Burr\u2019s horse broke his leg<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">and<\/span> so had to be shot.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">2.<\/span> John Manassas lost the cow.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">3.<\/span> Lieut. Wead\u2019s man Jones<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">with<\/span> his best horse not<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">yet<\/span> heard from.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">4.<\/span> The most unfortunate circumstance<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">of<\/span> being thrown under the temporary<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">command<\/span> of Kearney<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>[Page 89:]<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">April<\/span> 8 continued<br \/>\nCatlett\u2019s Station, Va.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Great<\/span> life this, most surely &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">9,,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> are still at the same<br \/>\nold place in the grocery store<br \/>\neating Joe\u2019s meals as he prepares<br \/>\nthem, now of mutton and now<br \/>\nof ham intermingled with the<br \/>\nusual supply of potatoes, bread<br \/>\nand coffee. The rain continues<br \/>\nto drizzle down making life<br \/>\nout doors peculiarly disagreeable.<br \/>\nAs to business we do simply<br \/>\nnothing. Reading, playing checkers,<br \/>\njoking, singing, flute playing and<br \/>\nviolin playing seems to be<br \/>\nabout everything [<em>carrot<\/em>: we] do. As I now<br \/>\nwrite Capt. Rodgers sits leaning<br \/>\nback in his chair playing<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 90:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>that most beautiful air:-<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 10px;\">&#8220;When<\/span> the swallow\u2019s homeward fly.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> try to accompany him<br \/>\nwith our voices.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">The<\/span> General is reading with<br \/>\nmuch interest Bulever Lytton\u2019s<br \/>\n\u201cStrange story\u201d. We hardly know<br \/>\nwhat to do with ourselves, but<br \/>\nall hope that the storm will<br \/>\nsoon cease and Old Sol will<br \/>\nonce more delight us with his<br \/>\npresence.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Now<\/span> the party begin to<br \/>\nplay and sing \u201cOld Grimes\u201d,<br \/>\nusing both flute and violin.<br \/>\nYesterday we had this venerable<br \/>\npiece set to impromptu verses<br \/>\ncomposed by Dr. Burr and<br \/>\nCol. Howland. No important<br \/>\ntransaction of the past two days<br \/>\nwas omitted but all were<br \/>\nfully considered.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 91:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Today<\/span> they brought me a letter<br \/>\nand it was a decided relief to<br \/>\nme from this oppressive ennui.<br \/>\nI mean to write letters and then<br \/>\nawait replies. But this has<br \/>\nalready been done days ago<br \/>\nand none have replied except<br \/>\nL who is always prompt. Still<br \/>\nI shall try it again.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">* * * *<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">News<\/span> We have some that<br \/>\nis pretty good. The enemy have<br \/>\nretreated from before us and<br \/>\nare doubtless making their way<br \/>\nto Richmond. They have also<br \/>\nfallen back from Fredricksburg.<br \/>\nMcClellan has advanced upon<br \/>\nYorktown and was expecting three<br \/>\ndays since to capture the place<br \/>\nafter a short siege.
