Slocum\u2019s<br \/>\nstaff.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Night<\/span> before last [<em>Carrot<\/em>: 13th. inst.)] about half<br \/>\nan hour after turning in, I was<br \/>\naroused from sleep by some one<br \/>\ncalling aloud for Lieut Shannon.<br \/>\nI made answer. The reply was<br \/>\n\u201cYou are ordered to report yourself<br \/>\nat head quarters immediately.\u201d<br \/>\nTen minutes afterwards I was<br \/>\nin presence of the General.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">He<\/span> questioned me a little,<br \/>\nasked if I was present in the<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 62:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>battle of Bull Run\u2014what my rank<br \/>\nwas then\u2014if I understood the drill,<br \/>\nand what was the quality of my<br \/>\nhand writing.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Finally<\/span> he dismissed me<br \/>\nsaying that he would send an<br \/>\norderly for me in the morning.<br \/>\nYesterday forenoon I was sent<br \/>\nfor accordingly and immediately<br \/>\nbegan my labors in the office<br \/>\nof General Slocum, as acting<br \/>\nAide-de-camp.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Last<\/span> evening we received<br \/>\norders to march to Paget\u2019s Tavern<br \/>\nabout half way back to camp,<br \/>\nbut when the column reached<br \/>\nthat place the General ordered<br \/>\nthe cols. of the different regiments<br \/>\nto act at their discretion about<br \/>\nreturning to [<em>Carrot<\/em>: the old] camp or bivouac.<br \/>\nHe and his staff quartered at<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 63:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>the residence of O\u2019Brien a famous<br \/>\nsecessionist. And this morning<br \/>\nafter taking breakfast we<br \/>\ngalloped into camp amid a<br \/>\ndrenching rain.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Here<\/span> we shall probably<br \/>\nremain until next Monday when<br \/>\nwithout doubt we shall march<br \/>\nto Alexandria and be taken down<br \/>\nthe river in transports. There is<br \/>\nto be movement toward Richmond<br \/>\nby water. The Merrimac must<br \/>\nbe looked after then.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Orders<\/span> have been issued to<br \/>\nthe several regiments composing<br \/>\nour brigade of my appointment as<br \/>\naide-de-camp. It seems to have<br \/>\npleased all my friends here and<br \/>\nI trust it will please my<br \/>\nfriends at home.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 64:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>I have got to make a great<br \/>\nmany purchases:- A full staff<br \/>\nsuit of clothes, Staff sword [?],<br \/>\novercoat, boots, cap and rubbers,<br \/>\ngauntlets, horse, saddle and<br \/>\ntrappings. These, too, must be<br \/>\nof the finest quality.
