\nCamp Franklin, Va.Here<\/span> we are back again
\nthough I am personally occupying
\na somewhat different position and
\nliving in a far different establishment.
\nToday I received a special and
\nwritten notification of my appointment
\nas aide-de-camp on Genl. Slocum\u2019s
\nstaff.
\nNight<\/span> before last [Carrot<\/em>: 13th. inst.)] about half
\nan hour after turning in, I was
\naroused from sleep by some one
\ncalling aloud for Lieut Shannon.
\nI made answer. The reply was
\n\u201cYou are ordered to report yourself
\nat head quarters immediately.\u201d
\nTen minutes afterwards I was
\nin presence of the General.
\nHe<\/span> questioned me a little,
\nasked if I was present in the<\/p>\n

battle of Bull Run\u2014what my rank
\nwas then\u2014if I understood the drill,
\nand what was the quality of my
\nhand writing.
\nFinally<\/span> he dismissed me
\nsaying that he would send an

\nYesterday forenoon I was sent
\nfor accordingly and immediately
\nbegan my labors in the office
\nof General Slocum, as acting
\nAide-de-camp.
\nLast<\/span> evening we received
\norders to march to Paget\u2019s Tavern
\nabout half way back to camp,
\nbut when the column reached
\nthat place the General ordered
\nthe cols. of the different regiments
\nto act at their discretion about
\nreturning to [Carrot<\/em>: the old] camp or bivouac.
\nHe and his staff quartered at<\/p>\n

the residence of O\u2019Brien a famous
\nsecessionist. And this morning
\nafter taking breakfast we
\ngalloped into camp amid a
\ndrenching rain.
\nHere<\/span> we shall probably
\nremain until next Monday when
\nwithout doubt we shall march
\nto Alexandria and be taken down
\nthe river in transports. There is
\nto be movement toward Richmond
\nby water. The Merrimac must
\nbe looked after then.
\nOrders<\/span> have been issued to
\nthe several regiments composing
\nour brigade of my appointment as
\naide-de-camp. It seems to have
\npleased all my friends here and
\nI trust it will please my
\nfriends at home.<\/p>\n

I have got to make a great
\nmany purchases:- A full staff
\nsuit of clothes, Staff sword [?],
\novercoat, boots, cap and rubbers,
\ngauntlets, horse, saddle and
\ntrappings. These, too, must be
\nof the finest quality. My pay
\nwill be about one hundred
\nand forty dollars a month, but
\nas my brother aide-de-camp said
\ntoday \u201cthe expenses will about eat
\nup the salary.\u201d I think so the
\nmore I consider it.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n
