As we ascended<br \/>\nthe high hill just outside of the<br \/>\ntown and caught the first glimpse<br \/>\nof the rebel earthworks the men<br \/>\nbroke into cheers.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Off<\/span> to our right we could<br \/>\nsee other troops filing into the town<br \/>\nand this morning I learn that<br \/>\nPorter\u2019s Division is also here. A<br \/>\ncontraband rode into camp last<br \/>\nevening bringing intelligence that<br \/>\nboth Centerville and Manassas<br \/>\nwere evacuated. The former may<br \/>\nbe but I don\u2019t believe the latter is.<br \/>\nWe had a rough night of it.<br \/>\nJimmie carried his pack very<br \/>\nwell and stands the exposure much<br \/>\nbetter than I expected he would.<br \/>\nImmediately after pitching our<br \/>\ntent last evening I started out<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 55:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>to bathe my feet. Not a long<br \/>\ndistance from camp I found<br \/>\na stream of water and this<br \/>\nmorning I feel the good effects<br \/>\nof that wash.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">After<\/span> breakfast this morning<br \/>\nI started out in company with Lt. Lyon<br \/>\nto see the town. We visited the Court<br \/>\nHouse and a few other buildings.<br \/>\nI also visited the rebel earthworks<br \/>\nand from both places brought away<br \/>\nsouvenirs.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Major<\/span> Scammon could not<br \/>\nfind a canteen when he left camp<br \/>\nbut this morning he got one which<br \/>\nis marked 14th Miss, Vols.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Have<\/span> been talking with the<br \/>\ncontraband who came in last<br \/>\nevening. He is very intelligent and<br \/>\nreplies promptly to all questions. While conversing with him 18 other<br \/>\ncontrabands passed up the road<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 56:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Kearny is ahead with his brigade.<br \/>\nMcClellan just rode by with his staff.<br \/>\nOfficial report is said to have come<br \/>\nthis morning from McDowell who<br \/>\nis at Manassas of the evacuation<br \/>\nof that place by the enemy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">March<\/span> 12th 1869<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> still remain at<br \/>\nFairfax Court House. The evacu-<br \/>\nation of Manassas by the enemy<br \/>\nis confirmed and our pickets, it<br \/>\nis said now extend fifteen<br \/>\nmiles beyond. This is great<br \/>\nnews. Manassas has indeed<br \/>\nbeen made a second Bowling<br \/>\nGreen as I predicted a few<br \/>\nweeks since. Now everything<br \/>\nis at a stand still and fears<br \/>\nare beginning to be expressed<br \/>\nfor the safety of Burnside.<br \/>\nRelief will undoubtedly be<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 57:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>sent to him at once.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">The<\/span> news of Genl. Curtises [sic]<br \/>\nvictory in Arkansas has reached<br \/>\nus and all of course feel<br \/>\nrejoiced. Ben McCullough is dead<br \/>\nand without doubt Secession<br \/>\nhas received its death blow in<br \/>\nthe South West. It is all in<br \/>\nvain that Beauregard repairs<br \/>\nto Island No. 10. His ablest efforts<br \/>\ncannot win for the cause of<br \/>\nthe rebellion [<em>Carrot<\/em>: any substantial success] so long as Buel [?]<br \/>\nand Grant pierce the centre<br \/>\nand Curtis and Sigel turn their<br \/>\nleft wing.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">This<\/span> Rebellion is on its<br \/>\nlast legs. Nothing can make<br \/>\nit prosper. Firey [sic] Southerners may<br \/>\ntalk of being exterminated,<br \/>\nbut they like to live as well<br \/>\nas any other people and they<br \/>\nhave too much judgement<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 58:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>to pour out their lives for nothing.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">* * * * *<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">While<\/span> conversing with a young<br \/>\nman yesterday who resides on<br \/>\nthe street where the Court House<br \/>\nstands I learned many interesting<br \/>\nfacts concerning the rebels, their<br \/>\nnumber, their purpose, and their<br \/>\nspirit.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">He<\/span> said that the rebels<br \/>\nmaintained and a large number<br \/>\nfirmly believed that we were<br \/>\ngoing to free their negroes. And<br \/>\nso they felt as though they were<br \/>\nfighting for their homes and<br \/>\ntheir all. These two impressions<br \/>\nI labored to convince him were<br \/>\nentirely wrong. And it is plain<br \/>\nthey are the cause of the stout<br \/>\nresistance which is made against<br \/>\nour arms.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 59:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">March<\/span> 12<br \/>\nFairfax Court Hse. <span style=\"margin-left: 20px;\">cont&#8217;d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Lieut<\/span> Atwood has just<br \/>\nloaned me some ink and<br \/>\nso I will try once more to<br \/>\nwrite with the ordinary appliances.*[<em>Written in margin<\/em>:The pencillings (sic) on the previous 6 pages having become quite dim have been written over with ink. (R.C.S.)]<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">There<\/span> is much speculation as<br \/>\nto what is to be done with us<br \/>\nsome maintaining that we shall<br \/>\nsoon return to camp, and others<br \/>\nthat we shall push forward<br \/>\ntomorrow.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">What<\/span> will really be done<br \/>\nwith us is I think extremely<br \/>\ndoubtful.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">One<\/span> of our company (H),<br \/>\npicked up a roll of skin plasters [?]<br \/>\nin the rebel entrenchments<br \/>\nyesterday.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">This<\/span> morning a flock<br \/>\nof geese passed over us flying<br \/>\npretty low. It was not many<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 60:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>seconds before they were seen.<br \/>\nThen the soldiers began to shout<br \/>\nand pretty soon a rifle was<br \/>\ndischarged, and as the flock<br \/>\npassed over a cavalry troop<br \/>\nas many as a dozen shots<br \/>\nwere fired at them. But not<br \/>\none took effect.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Reports<\/span> continue to reach<br \/>\nus of the evacuation of Centerville<br \/>\nand Manassas.
