We did not attend<br \/>\nthe Presidents reception because<br \/>\nhe did not have any. We<br \/>\nhowever spent the evening very<br \/>\npleasantly calling of [?] Gautiers<br \/>\nand purchasing some books.<br \/>\nDid not get to bed till this<br \/>\nmorning. Had some music<br \/>\nbefore retiring in the parlor<br \/>\nof the Central House. Quite<br \/>\ninterested in the old gentleman<br \/>\nwho helped me sing.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">&#8220;The<\/span> star spangled banner\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">and<\/span> who in his<br \/>\nyouth could \u201csing all the<br \/>\npopular songs\u201d; who was personally<br \/>\nintimate with many of the<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 37:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>great men who had figured at<br \/>\nWashington, delighted in an<br \/>\nexecution or a duel, thought John<br \/>\nBrown hung \u201cmost beautifully\u201d<br \/>\nprofessionally speaking, and would<br \/>\nhave liked to have seen him<br \/>\ntaken down and hung again<br \/>\nand the operation repeated &#8211;<br \/>\nwould have gone a thousand<br \/>\nmiles and walked, too, to see<br \/>\nit. Knew O. Jennings Wise [?], Pryor,<br \/>\nand all that clique at Richmond,<br \/>\nthey were cold blooded and<br \/>\n\u201crashly [?] game\u201d as he termed it.<br \/>\nHe knew all about the duel<br \/>\nin which Cilley was killed\u2014<br \/>\nand had been engaged himself<br \/>\nin several personal affairs.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Strange<\/span> old man! Such<br \/>\nsentiments are very well<br \/>\nfor Feudal times\u2014But for this<br \/>\nage how sadly behind hand! [?]<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 38:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Today having arisen about 11 AM<br \/>\nwe visited several establishments<br \/>\non Pennsylvania Avenue, Willard,<br \/>\nand the Sanitary Commission. Finally<br \/>\nI went to the capitol alone, and there<br \/>\nafter admiring the beautiful paintings<br \/>\nthat have recently been added to<br \/>\nthe original collection in the Rotunda<br \/>\nwe passed on to the splendid<br \/>\napartment where the members of<br \/>\ncongress were in session.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Grow<\/span> was in the chair<br \/>\nperfectly at home directly by<br \/>\nhis side that Prince of young<br \/>\nparliamentarians Morris. The speaker<br \/>\nwas guiding the house with<br \/>\nmasterly skill and the tide of<br \/>\nbusiness swept it on. Bill after<br \/>\nbill was presented, and hardly<br \/>\nhad the gentleman from Wisconsin<br \/>\nwith feeble voice pronounced its<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 39:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>object before seized by the page<br \/>\nit was placed in the speakers<br \/>\nhand;- then we hear the<br \/>\nStentorian Voice of the clerk<br \/>\nas with hurried speech he<br \/>\nnames again its title and<br \/>\nobject.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">When<\/span> this very uninteresting<br \/>\nbusiness was going on Suddenly<br \/>\nup rose Mr. Crittendon [sic] of Kentucky<br \/>\nand asks leave to interrupt<br \/>\nthe gentleman but for a moment<br \/>\nthis was readily granted. He<br \/>\nwanted to communicate to the<br \/>\nHouse a message which he<br \/>\nhad just received from Gen\u2019l. McClellan<br \/>\ninforming him of the capture of<br \/>\nGen\u2019l Price and his staff. This<br \/>\nwas received with loud and<br \/>\nlong applause. What clapping<br \/>\nof hands!<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 40:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Shortly afterward Hickman of<br \/>\nPennsylvania introduced a resolution<br \/>\nof inquiry relative to a paragraph<br \/>\nin one of the Baltimore papers which<br \/>\nreflected on the loyalty of Mr.<br \/>\nVallandigham of Ohio. The latter<br \/>\nreplied at once and with considerable<br \/>\nspirit. Then followed one of these<br \/>\nCongressional affairs of which I<br \/>\nhave frequently read. The members<br \/>\nleft their seats filled the aisles and<br \/>\nstood upon the floor in front of<br \/>\nthe speakers desk. The excitement<br \/>\ngrew more and more intense, and<br \/>\nfinally the sharp slap of the<br \/>\nspeakers hammer accompanied<br \/>\nby his not less sharp voice ordering<br \/>\nthe gentlemen to retake their seats<br \/>\nput an end to the altercation.<br \/>\nFinally the resolution was withdrawn.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">A<\/span> short time afterward I withdrew<br \/>\nalso. The Senate I did not visit,<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 41<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>but I stepped into the court room<br \/>\nof the U.S. Supreme Court. There<br \/>\nall was quiet and thoughtful.<br \/>\nJudge Black was at the bar<br \/>\ntalking to the judges in a very<br \/>\nlow voice. His whole tone and<br \/>\nmanner was thoroughly conver-<br \/>\nsational. Judge Tawny was all<br \/>\nattention and seemed to be well<br \/>\nversed in his duties as Chief<br \/>\nJustice. Clifford looked younger<br \/>\nthan any other one, and much<br \/>\nmore active. How interesting a<br \/>\nplace this is! Here the brightest<br \/>\nintellects the bar has ever furnished<br \/>\nhave been gathered and here<br \/>\nhave they won their brightest<br \/>\ntheir freshest laurels. The<br \/>\nimmortal Webster, Clay, Calhoun,<br \/>\nJay, Marshall, Wist [?] and<br \/>\nChoate! Before I went out an<br \/>\ninteresting and able speaker<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 42:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>began to address the bar. It was<br \/>\nReverdy Johnson- one of the first<br \/>\nlawyers in America.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Having<\/span> seen this much of the<br \/>\nCapitol wended our way to<br \/>\nGautiers where an excellent dinner<br \/>\nwas in waiting for us. We<br \/>\ntried to do it full justice, and<br \/>\nI think we succeeded.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">While<\/span> there we overheard<br \/>\ngentlemen talking of an armistice<br \/>\nand a speedy termination of the<br \/>\nwar. So soon? Well I care not<br \/>\nhow soon it is done only that<br \/>\nit be done well.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Giving<\/span> Charlie parting instructions<br \/>\nand a hearty good bye I get on<br \/>\nboard of the Omnibus we soon<br \/>\nreach the boat and in three<br \/>\nquarters of an hour I am walking<br \/>\nthe streets of Alexandria.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 43:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>An hour afterward I set out for<br \/>\nthe camp. A drunken sentinel<br \/>\nlevels his piece at me and<br \/>\ncocks it. I was unarmed and<br \/>\nso had to turn back upon him.
