\n8<\/span> a.m.
\nThis<\/span> is a good time to
\ncommence my Journal again,
\nafter the hurricane and storm
\nof yesterday.
\nOn<\/span> the 17th ult. [?] not being
\nable to wait any longer we
\nhad on baggage tossed into
\na Mexican Lugger and with
\nthe parting injunction of the
\nGeneral to pitch Head quarters
\na mile and a half from land
\nwe \u201clet go our weather [?] plumage.\u201d
\nGreat<\/span> experience that getting over
\nthe bar [?] tho\u2019. Just as we were coming
\nupon the bar [?] the skipper jumps up
\nand declares that he does not know
\nthe channels. At which remarkable
\nsaying every one looked at his
\nfriend. Some of us suggested that<\/p>\n

he might have done better if
\nhe had considered that matter
\nbefore starting. But rather than
\nmeet the fate of the poor fellows
\nin the Schooner who were wrecked
\non Padre Island the day before
\nwe decided to \u201cbuff up\u201d and
\nwait for some one [sic] to go in whom
\nwe could follow.
\nSo<\/span> we took a sail of
\nhalf an hour during which
\ntime poor Hawkes in the bottom
\nof the boat became very sick, and
\nvery unreconciled to our condition.
\nAt last another lugger appeared to
\nbe making for the entrance. So
\nfollowing her we at last made
\na landing.
\nSelected<\/span> a place for Head
\nQuarters to the right of the 1st [?],
\nand put up half a dozen tents.<\/p>\n

Hawkes, a prime fellow, gets
\nsomething in the way of a
\nlunch + we enjoy it. Open
\nmy case of claret + find
\nit as good as any
\nwe had on the steamer.
\nOut<\/span> medicine during
\nthe voyage to prevent sea
\nsickness was champagne cock
\ntails [carrot<\/em>: and claret punch] with ice something that
\nis unknown to this climate.
\nAn excellent preventative for sea
\nsickness + the only thing that
\nseemed to revive poor Johnnie.<\/p>\n

Next day General comes ashore
\n+ scolds us all for not having
\nhis tents fixed right.<\/p>\n

Finally<\/span> Gen. I. is appointed
\nPost Commandant of Brazos Santiago,
\nand I go down to take the
\nposition of Post Adjutant.
\nA<\/span> very good home for
\nmy office + quarters; but not
\nmuch of anything in the way
\nof books + papers.
\nOpen<\/span> a set of Post
\nbooks which with the books for Div.
\nHead Quarters keep me tolerably
\nbusy.<\/p>\n

Gen. Weitzel comes finally\u2014
\nwith Wheeler a full blown
\nLieut. Col. and a Major for
\nthe 1st. Div. – Brownson having
\nbecome disgusted and resigned at
\nNew Orleans.<\/p>\n

Then<\/span> Sheridan comes down
\nwith his staff.<\/p>\n

Then<\/span> this violent storm
\nof yesterday comes throwing
\nof over piles of boards on the
\npoor fellows whose tents happened
\nto be pitched near by\u2014
\nburying some of them who after
\nbeing dug out have to be
\ncarried to the hospital so<\/p>\n

injured are they. The steamers
\nat the wharves put out to have
\nthemselves + the poor little buggers
\nare tossed about like so many
\npaper boats in a tub of water.
\nEvery encampment is six inches under
\nwater in an hour + the night becomes
\na horrid one for men + officers.<\/p>\n

Gen.<\/span> Jackson having been
\nrelieved from duty as Port
\nCommandant at Brazos
\nSantiago, orders were issued to
\nmarch to Ringgold Barracks.
\nThe 3rd Brigade is already at
\nWhite\u2019s Ranch and the 2nd.
\nwill march there today.
\nWe<\/span> go forward tomorrow
\nmorning.<\/p>\n

\nluggage on the \u201cCora\u201d which
\nis to sail up the Rio Grande
\nto Ringgold Barracks, we
\nset out for White\u2019s Ranch

\nalong the beach was<\/p>\n

\nAt<\/span> Clarksville we visited
\nGeneral Stack [?] whom Weitzel
\npronounced a \u201cinstitution.\u201d
\nWe found him with his

\nmuch more taken up with it,
\ntan with us, his go callers.
\nWe<\/span> crossed the Rio Grande
\nand visited Bagdad, Mexico, and
\ndined at Madame Champlain\u2019s
\nI propose to fall back on the
\n[carrot<\/em>: evening [?]] that dinner whenever we
\nget an half rations.
\nIt<\/span> was overpowering.<\/p>\n

Returning<\/span> we reached White\u2019s
\nRanch after dark and turned
