[?] not being<br \/>\nable to wait any longer we<br \/>\nhad on baggage tossed into<br \/>\na Mexican Lugger and with<br \/>\nthe parting injunction of the<br \/>\nGeneral to pitch Head quarters<br \/>\na mile and a half from land<br \/>\nwe \u201clet go our weather [?] plumage.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Great<\/span> experience that getting over<br \/>\nthe bar [?] tho\u2019. Just as we were coming<br \/>\nupon the bar [?] the skipper jumps up<br \/>\nand declares that he does not know<br \/>\nthe channels. At which remarkable<br \/>\nsaying every one looked at his<br \/>\nfriend. Some of us suggested that<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 32:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>he might have done better if<br \/>\nhe had considered that matter<br \/>\nbefore starting. But rather than<br \/>\nmeet the fate of the poor fellows<br \/>\nin the Schooner who were wrecked<br \/>\non Padre Island the day before<br \/>\nwe decided to \u201cbuff up\u201d and<br \/>\nwait for some one [sic] to go in whom<br \/>\nwe could follow.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">So<\/span> we took a sail of<br \/>\nhalf an hour during which<br \/>\ntime poor Hawkes in the bottom<br \/>\nof the boat became very sick, and<br \/>\nvery unreconciled to our condition.<br \/>\nAt last another lugger appeared to<br \/>\nbe making for the entrance. So<br \/>\nfollowing her we at last made<br \/>\na landing.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Selected<\/span> a place for Head<br \/>\nQuarters to the right of the 1st [?],<br \/>\nand put up half a dozen tents.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 33:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Hawkes, a prime fellow, gets<br \/>\nsomething in the way of a<br \/>\nlunch + we enjoy it. Open<br \/>\nmy case of claret + find<br \/>\nit as good as any<br \/>\nwe had on the steamer.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Out<\/span> medicine during<br \/>\nthe voyage to prevent sea<br \/>\nsickness was champagne cock<br \/>\ntails [<em>carrot<\/em>: and claret punch] with ice something that<br \/>\nis unknown to this climate.<br \/>\nAn excellent preventative for sea<br \/>\nsickness + the only thing that<br \/>\nseemed to revive poor Johnnie.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">______,,______<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 34:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Next day General comes ashore<br \/>\n+ scolds us all for not having<br \/>\nhis tents fixed right.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Dull<\/span> place for<br \/>\nseveral days during which time<br \/>\nI work at my office, no one<br \/>\ntroubling me.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Finally<\/span> Gen. I. is appointed<br \/>\nPost Commandant of Brazos Santiago,<br \/>\nand I go down to take the<br \/>\nposition of Post Adjutant.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">A<\/span> very good home for<br \/>\nmy office + quarters; but not<br \/>\nmuch of anything in the way<br \/>\nof books + papers.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Open<\/span> a set of Post<br \/>\nbooks which with the books for Div.<br \/>\nHead Quarters keep me tolerably<br \/>\nbusy.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 35:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Gen. Weitzel comes finally\u2014<br \/>\nwith Wheeler a full blown<br \/>\nLieut. Col. and a Major for<br \/>\nthe 1st. Div. &#8211; Brownson having<br \/>\nbecome disgusted and resigned at<br \/>\nNew Orleans.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Then<\/span> Sheridan comes down<br \/>\nwith his staff.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Then<\/span> this violent storm<br \/>\nof yesterday comes throwing<br \/>\nof over piles of boards on the<br \/>\npoor fellows whose tents happened<br \/>\nto be pitched near by\u2014<br \/>\nburying some of them who after<br \/>\nbeing dug out have to be<br \/>\ncarried to the hospital so<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 36:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>injured are they. The steamers<br \/>\nat the wharves put out to have<br \/>\nthemselves + the poor little buggers<br \/>\nare tossed about like so many<br \/>\npaper boats in a tub of water.<br \/>\nEvery encampment is six inches under<br \/>\nwater in an hour + the night becomes<br \/>\na horrid one for men + officers.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">10th.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Gen.<\/span> Jackson having been<br \/>\nrelieved from duty as Port<br \/>\nCommandant at Brazos<br \/>\nSantiago, orders were issued to<br \/>\nmarch to Ringgold Barracks.<br \/>\nThe 3rd Brigade is already at<br \/>\nWhite\u2019s Ranch and the 2nd.<br \/>\nwill march there today.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> go forward tomorrow<br \/>\nmorning.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 37:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Green of the class of \u201963 comes<br \/>\nto see me before going home<br \/>\n&#8211;having resigned\u2014and we<br \/>\nchat about college matters sitting<br \/>\nin the little cupola<br \/>\non the top of my office.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">11<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">This<\/span> forenoon after packing<br \/>\na goodly portion of our<br \/>\nluggage on the \u201cCora\u201d which<br \/>\nis to sail up the Rio Grande<br \/>\nto Ringgold Barracks, we<br \/>\nset out for White\u2019s Ranch<br \/>\nwith our horses and the<br \/>\nlight wagons.
