In doing<br \/>\nit found myself trying to<br \/>\nwake a dead man. Set<br \/>\noff after div. supply train<br \/>\nFound it near Rohrersville,<br \/>\nand brought it up to our<br \/>\nlines.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">A<\/span> flag of Truce has been<br \/>\npassing between the contending<br \/>\nforces this morning. Our<br \/>\nmen are now busily at work<br \/>\nburying the dead. Beals wounded<br \/>\nThese casualties happened in<br \/>\nthe woods where we now have<br \/>\nour head quarters. T\u2019is a strange<br \/>\nsight to see men moving around<br \/>\namong the dead with so much<br \/>\nindifference. Last night when<br \/>\nI came up from the ammunition<br \/>\ntrain I brought along an armful of<br \/>\nstraw which served as my bed in<br \/>\nthe plowed field just beyond where<br \/>\nmany of our dead lay. The 10th<br \/>\nMaine boys are burying their dead<br \/>\nabout twenty feet from me as I<br \/>\nnow write.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 35:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>17. Bartlett<br \/>\nEast Stoneham<br \/>\nOxford Co.<br \/>\nMe<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">Sept.<\/span> 19th<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Woke<\/span> up this morning before<br \/>\ndaylight. Orders came from Gen.<br \/>\nMcClellan to advance skirmishers<br \/>\nalong the whole line. Did so at<br \/>\nonce and on our front met with<br \/>\nno opposition. Our men occupied<br \/>\nthe woods where the enemy lay last<br \/>\nnight. We rode through the woods<br \/>\nand some mile [sic] beyond. We found<br \/>\na large number of unburied dead<br \/>\nboth theirs and ours. There were<br \/>\nseveral officers, a large number<br \/>\nof muskets scattered around and<br \/>\nevery indication of complete demor-<br \/>\nalization. The Tunkers church was<br \/>\nriddled by our artillery fire. The<br \/>\nbattle field presented a sight<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 36:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>beyond description.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">9th<\/span> Geo Longstead<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">5th<\/span> Va Jackson<br \/>\nWaggons came up and \u201cFrank\u201d<br \/>\ngot us breakfast of Eggs, ham, chicken,<br \/>\npotatoes, bread, and coffee. Lt. Col.<br \/>\nGreene eat with us. Just before<br \/>\nI had taken some coffee with Chaplain<br \/>\nAdams &#8211; 5th, Me. After breakfast division<br \/>\nmoved across the battlefield into the<br \/>\nHagerstown road and then beyond<br \/>\ninto position facing Sharpsburg our<br \/>\nline of battle nearly perpendicularly<br \/>\nto the Turnpike. Had just got into<br \/>\nposition when order came from Gen.<br \/>\nMcClellan to push at once toward the<br \/>\nriver.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> have now reached the<br \/>\nriver and our troops are in position.<br \/>\nThe enemy have crossed and have<br \/>\ntheir batteries lining the hills on the<br \/>\nopposite side of the river. Today is the Sabbath and<br \/>\nI trust it will be one of rest and<br \/>\nquiet.
