Heavy firing again began<br \/>\nearly and continued in direction<br \/>\nof Harper\u2019s Ferry and along up the<br \/>\nvalley. Crossed the mountain and<br \/>\nentered Jefferson about 9a.m. There is<br \/>\na most magnificent view from<br \/>\nthe summit.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Power<\/span> through Jefferson to the<br \/>\nmusic of fifes and drums. People<br \/>\nseemingly glad to see us. Proceeded<br \/>\non to within a mile of Birkheadsville,<br \/>\nbegan to skirmish from that point<br \/>\nup to the village which was finally<br \/>\noccupied by our skirmishers. Discovered<br \/>\nbatteries in various positions in the<br \/>\nmountain side and on both sides<br \/>\nof the Gap. Tried to reach the enemys [sic]<br \/>\nbattery with 3 inch ordnance guns,<br \/>\ncouldn\u2019t do it. Finally there was a<br \/>\nconsultation held between the Division<br \/>\nand Brigade Commanders and it was<br \/>\ndetermined to storm the pass.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 28:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Accordingly the division was<br \/>\nmoved under cover of the woods<br \/>\nto the front and in lines of<br \/>\ntwo battalions. Bartlett leading, and<br \/>\nNewton next, they pressed forward.<br \/>\nThe line of march was to the<br \/>\nright of the town. While moving<br \/>\nover the open fields our men<br \/>\nwere subjected to a severe fire<br \/>\nof Artillery from the enemy\u2019s batteries<br \/>\nposted on the hills until they reached<br \/>\nthe base of the mountain. There we<br \/>\nbegan to feel the enemy\u2019s infantry.<br \/>\nAfter an hour\u2019s firing the lines made<br \/>\na general charge up the slope and<br \/>\nthis ended one of the most<br \/>\nmagnificent fights of the war.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">They<\/span> fired at our Staff repeatedly.<br \/>\nThe battle ground was a terrible<br \/>\nsight. And then the passing<br \/>\nof the wounded + the prisoners<br \/>\nand the hurrying by of<br \/>\nammunition trains all mingled<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 29<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>with the troops was one of the<br \/>\nmost satisfying + satisfactory<br \/>\nspectacles that I have witnessed<br \/>\nduring the war.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">For<\/span> once we whipped the<br \/>\nenemy. We gained possession of<br \/>\nthe Gap and forced the enemy<br \/>\nto retreat down the other side of<br \/>\nthe mountain into the valley. We<br \/>\ntook prisoners, colors, and guns.<br \/>\nThe wounded and dead of the enemy<br \/>\nwere scattered all along the mountain<br \/>\nside.
