August<\/span> 30th 1862<\/p>\n

We<\/span> marched from
\nour encampment last evening at
\nAnnandale to Centerville.
\nJust<\/span> as we passed Fairfax C.H.
\nGen. Slocum directed me to go forward
\nand obtain all the information
\npossible relative to the work of
\nour present line of battle. I could
\nlearn nothing of Gen. Butterfield, who
\nwith the rest of Gen. Porter\u2019s corps
\nreached Centerville just as I arrived.
\nI went to Pope\u2019s headquarters. No one
\nthere. Afterward saw Gen. Griffin
\nwho could tell me nothing. Then
\nroad [sic] up Warrenton Pike saw Gen. Sturges
\nand talked with one of his aides; but
\nlearned nothing.
\nAfter<\/span> passing Cub Run met a
\ngentleman who was serving as an
\nEngineer on Gen. McDowell\u2019s corp and
\nwho told me much that was interesting.<\/p>\n

Saw 350 rebel prisoners near
\nPope\u2019s head quarters. Good looking
\nmen but poorly clothed.
\nAccompanying<\/span> maps show

Yesterday<\/span> afternoon our
\ndivision pushed on up the
\nWarrenton pike from Fairfax C.H.
\nand stopped about a mile beyond
\nCub Run. hardly sat down to rest
\nbefore we noticed struggling on
\nthe left of our position that
\nwas increasing alarmingly every
\nmoment. In half an hour the
\nwhole army were falling back, our
\nleft wing having been turned. Batty
\nD immediately went into position
\non the left of the Pike supported<\/p>\n

by our Infantry. The stream
\npassed by for an hour, and then
\nwe fell back in order to Centerville.
\nMeanwhile I had an opportunity to
\nvisit the Maine 1st cavalry. Saw
\nCapt. Boothby + St. Chadborne for a
\nfew minutes.
\nTried<\/span> to sleep on the ground
\nbut didn\u2019t succeed very well. No
\ndinner, no supper.
\nThis<\/span> morning our orderlies
\n(five fellows from 2nd Cavalry) gave
\nme some of their excellent coffee.
\nBegan to rain. No poncho and
\ngot wet through. Went out with
\nGen. beyond Cub Run. Took in
\nbattery + support just beyond the
\nRun. Superintended destruction of
\nbridge afterwards. Went into position
\non the hill just this side again.
\nWhile standing on the hill noticed
\npicket firing near our old position.
\nEnemy opened with guns from
\nthe road. Fired but a short time<\/p>\n

We sent up a battery to supply<\/p>\n

1st Maryland. Returned to Centerville.
\nVisited Gen. Pope\u2019s head quarters. Saw
\nhim, Heintzleman + Sumner.
\nWe<\/span> got us some ham, coffee
\nand bread.

The opinion is that the enemy
\nare passing around us by both
\nflanks. But Banks is at
\nManassas. So it is not likely
\nthat they have gone that way,
\nat least. I think it is probable
\nthat they have gone round our
\nright flanks and we shall hear
\nof them in the vicinity of Washington.
\nMany think they do wrong in
\nkeeping us here.
\nRodgers<\/span> is sick and has
\ngone to Washington. I am trying
\nto serve for him. Gwindon [\/] and
\nI am the only ones left with
\nthe Gen.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n
