Slocum directed me to go forward<br \/>\nand obtain all the information<br \/>\npossible relative to the work of<br \/>\nour present line of battle. I could<br \/>\nlearn nothing of Gen. Butterfield, who<br \/>\nwith the rest of Gen. Porter\u2019s corps<br \/>\nreached Centerville just as I arrived.<br \/>\nI went to Pope\u2019s headquarters. No one<br \/>\nthere. Afterward saw Gen. Griffin<br \/>\nwho could tell me nothing. Then<br \/>\nroad [sic] up Warrenton Pike saw Gen. Sturges<br \/>\nand talked with one of his aides; but<br \/>\nlearned nothing.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">After<\/span> passing Cub Run met a<br \/>\ngentleman who was serving as an<br \/>\nEngineer on Gen. McDowell\u2019s corp and<br \/>\nwho told me much that was interesting.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 5:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Saw 350 rebel prisoners near<br \/>\nPope\u2019s head quarters. Good looking<br \/>\nmen but poorly clothed.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Accompanying<\/span> maps show<br \/>\nthe three different positions.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">31st<\/span>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Yesterday<\/span> afternoon our<br \/>\ndivision pushed on up the<br \/>\nWarrenton pike from Fairfax C.H.<br \/>\nand stopped about a mile beyond<br \/>\nCub Run. hardly sat down to rest<br \/>\nbefore we noticed struggling on<br \/>\nthe left of our position that<br \/>\nwas increasing alarmingly every<br \/>\nmoment. In half an hour the<br \/>\nwhole army were falling back, our<br \/>\nleft wing having been turned. Batty<br \/>\nD immediately went into position<br \/>\non the left of the Pike supported<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 6:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>by our Infantry. The stream<br \/>\npassed by for an hour, and then<br \/>\nwe fell back in order to Centerville.<br \/>\nMeanwhile I had an opportunity to<br \/>\nvisit the Maine 1st cavalry. Saw<br \/>\nCapt. Boothby + St. Chadborne for a<br \/>\nfew minutes.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Tried<\/span> to sleep on the ground<br \/>\nbut didn\u2019t succeed very well. No<br \/>\ndinner, no supper.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">This<\/span> morning our orderlies<br \/>\n(five fellows from 2nd Cavalry) gave<br \/>\nme some of their excellent coffee.<br \/>\nBegan to rain. No poncho and<br \/>\ngot wet through. Went out with<br \/>\nGen. beyond Cub Run. Took in<br \/>\nbattery + support just beyond the<br \/>\nRun. Superintended destruction of<br \/>\nbridge afterwards. Went into position<br \/>\non the hill just this side again.<br \/>\nWhile standing on the hill noticed<br \/>\npicket firing near our old position.<br \/>\nEnemy opened with guns from<br \/>\nthe road. Fired but a short time<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>We sent up a battery to supply<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 7:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>1st Maryland. Returned to Centerville.<br \/>\nVisited Gen. Pope\u2019s head quarters. Saw<br \/>\nhim, Heintzleman + Sumner.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> got us some ham, coffee<br \/>\nand bread.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Go<\/span> into position. here it is.<\/p>\n<p>[<em>map<\/em>]<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 8:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>The opinion is that the enemy<br \/>\nare passing around us by both<br \/>\nflanks. But Banks is at<br \/>\nManassas. So it is not likely<br \/>\nthat they have gone that way,<br \/>\nat least. I think it is probable<br \/>\nthat they have gone round our<br \/>\nright flanks and we shall hear<br \/>\nof them in the vicinity of Washington.<br \/>\nMany think they do wrong in<br \/>\nkeeping us here.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Rodgers<\/span> is sick and has<br \/>\ngone to Washington. I am trying<br \/>\nto serve for him.
