Rodgers [<em>carrot<\/em>: A.A.G.] saying that<br \/>\nthe General was going to Mechanicsville<br \/>\nand that his aides-de-camp were<br \/>\nto accompany him. However we did<br \/>\nnot get off till nearly day break,<br \/>\nreaching Mechanicsville about six o\u2019clock.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">After<\/span> taking some breakfast<br \/>\nat Col. Howland\u2019s head quarters we<br \/>\nrode out to examine the positions.<br \/>\nOur batteries posted so as to command<br \/>\nthe Turnpike were visited first and<br \/>\nthen the picquets. I went out and<br \/>\nbrought in the officer commanding the<br \/>\ncavalry videttes.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">About<\/span> ten o\u2019clock the General<br \/>\nsent me with a scout to examine<br \/>\nMeadow bridge and post a vidette<br \/>\nto carefully watch it. I did so<br \/>\nreturning just before dinner.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 140:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">May.<\/span><br \/>\nAfter dinner we were very quietly<br \/>\nchatting among ourselves when the<br \/>\nMajor commanding Cavalry and his<br \/>\nAdjutant came galloping up and<br \/>\nexclaiming that the enemy had ap-<br \/>\npeared and were about to cross<br \/>\nthe bridge in force. This of course<br \/>\nstartled us all. But it proved to<br \/>\nbe only a stampede of the worst<br \/>\nsort in which I played a very<br \/>\nprominent part.
