This<\/span> morning as I was
\nquietly reading the Bible, Lieut. W.
\nmy brother aide comes rushing in
\nwith the exclamation: \u201cYorktown has
\nbeen evacuated and our division
\nreembarks [sic] at once.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nAll<\/span> was hurry and
\nconfusion throughout all of yesterday
\nAt night we ran out into the
\nbay and this morning early we
\nsailed for Yorktown. Before sitting
\ndown to breakfast we were anchored
\nbeneath the frowning but deserted
\nbatteries of the rebels on the one
\nside Gloucester, on the other Yorktown.
\nThe<\/span> severe storm could
\nnot prevent us from desiring to<\/p>\n

visit these celebrated fortifications,
\nand many did so. I went in
\ncompany with Col. Jackson Heath.
\nThe enemy seem to have left in a
\ngreat hurry abandoning immense
\nquantities of ordnance stores. We
\nhad to move around very carefully
\nto avoid the Torpedoes. Col. Jackson
\nstepped about very lightly. Guards
\nwere stationed throughout the
\ntown to prevent persons from going
\nwhere it was suspected they were.
\nI picked a few leaves and brought
\nthem away with me for souvenirs.<\/p>\n

In<\/span> the evening the General
\nsends me for a tug [?] to bring
