\nOff Poquosin River 22<\/span>,,At<\/span> 6 ok this morning I
\nleft the ship on board of the
\nlife boat to obtain a tug or
\nsteamer to use during the day in
\nbringing the rations to land to
\nbe cooked. I obtained three boats.
\nThe first went to Old Point Comfort
\nthe second ran aground and
\nthe third succeeded in reaching
\nthe ship.
\nWe<\/span> also got off our
\nhorses who by this time must
\nbe feeling stiff and sore. They
\nwill have an opportunity to
\nstretch themselves and lay down
\nwhich they so much need.
\nThis<\/span> kind of life is getting
\nto be extremely monotonous. The
\nmen can do little in the way
\nof bodily exercise and they have
\nto pass the time by singing,<\/p>\n

joking, reading, writing, playing
\ngames, conversing, and drinking.
\nI can now plainly see how it is
\nthat men may become indolent
\nand inactive in their ways from
\nlong service in the army. I
\nappreciate the fact. Indulgence
\nin the matter of liquors is a
\ncustom as general among those
\nwith whom I am forced to
\nassociate as taking dinner or
\nsupper. I have seen more drinking
\nin a week\u2019s time while I have
\nbeen a soldier than I was previously
\naccustomed to see during a whole
\nyear. And so it is with card
\nplaying and gambling and
\nprofanity. It is not surprising
\nthat I am fast getting inclined
\nto pass these vices by and abhor
\nthem less. Yet I must be very
\ncareful lest betrayed into the same<\/p>\n

indulgence. Thank God I can
\nstill say that the first glass of
\nliquor has yet to pass my lips.
\nIn such a course my safety lies.
\nYet there are other vices other sins.
\nAnd let me avoid them, too.

\nWe<\/span> have some interesting
\nconversations together among the
\nstaff officers. Last evening the General
\ntold us something of the proposed
\nplan in which our division is
\nto have a chief part. We shall be
\naccompanied by gunboats under
\ncommand of Captain Rodgers. I
\nsaw him on board of the Mystic,
\nGenl. Franklin\u2019s head quarters, a
\nfew days since and listened
\nto his explanation of a debarkation
\nunder fire. We shall probably have
\nto try it soon. This the General
\nsays. There will be two divisions<\/p>\n

under the command of Genl. Franklin
\nand we shall operate against Glou-
\ncester. The expedition will be
\nsuccessful and make Genl. Franklin
\na Maj. General probably. He is able.

\nI<\/span> have been reading \u201cThe
\nPartisan Leader\u201d a work that
\nhas been laying about our cabin
\nquarters. It professes to have been
\nwritten a dozen or more years
\nsince and is curiously prophetic.
\nIt is nothing more than a compilation
\nof the arguments used by \u201cStates
\nRights men\u201d and a defense for
\nforcibly opposing the U.S. Government
\n\u2014an apology for disunion. It is harmless
\nI presume of it would not be
\nallowed publication. The writer is<\/p>\n

evidently a full blooded South Carolinian.
\nI<\/span> have been reading some very
\ninteresting fiction, too. Henry Arkell
\nis splendid and to my best liking.
\nStudent life\u2014its jealousies, rivalries
\nhonors, generous actions and mean
\nones, also, are portrayed in fine
\nterms. The chief actor is my favorite
\nas well as the Dean\u2019s and \u201call the
\nrest.\u201d If ever I shall be permitted
\nto resume my studies again may
\nit be with such a noble and
\nChristian spirit.

\nThey<\/span> say that we are going
\nto steam down to Fortress Munroe
\ntoday for pleasure. It is only a
