I obtained three boats.<br \/>\nThe first went to Old Point Comfort<br \/>\nthe second ran aground and<br \/>\nthe third succeeded in reaching<br \/>\nthe ship.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> also got off our<br \/>\nhorses who by this time must<br \/>\nbe feeling stiff and sore. They<br \/>\nwill have an opportunity to<br \/>\nstretch themselves and lay down<br \/>\nwhich they so much need.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">This<\/span> kind of life is getting<br \/>\nto be extremely monotonous. The<br \/>\nmen can do little in the way<br \/>\nof bodily exercise and they have<br \/>\nto pass the time by singing,<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 99:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>joking, reading, writing, playing<br \/>\ngames, conversing, and drinking.<br \/>\nI can now plainly see how it is<br \/>\nthat men may become indolent<br \/>\nand inactive in their ways from<br \/>\nlong service in the army. I<br \/>\nappreciate the fact. Indulgence<br \/>\nin the matter of liquors is a<br \/>\ncustom as general among those<br \/>\nwith whom I am forced to<br \/>\nassociate as taking dinner or<br \/>\nsupper. I have seen more drinking<br \/>\nin a week\u2019s time while I have<br \/>\nbeen a soldier than I was previously<br \/>\naccustomed to see during a whole<br \/>\nyear. And so it is with card<br \/>\nplaying and gambling and<br \/>\nprofanity. It is not surprising<br \/>\nthat I am fast getting inclined<br \/>\nto pass these vices by and abhor<br \/>\nthem less. Yet I must be very<br \/>\ncareful lest betrayed into the same<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 100:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>indulgence. Thank God I can<br \/>\nstill say that the first glass of<br \/>\nliquor has yet to pass my lips.<br \/>\nIn such a course my safety lies.<br \/>\nYet there are other vices other sins.<br \/>\nAnd let me avoid them, too.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">* * * *<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">We<\/span> have some interesting<br \/>\nconversations together among the<br \/>\nstaff officers. Last evening the General<br \/>\ntold us something of the proposed<br \/>\nplan in which our division is<br \/>\nto have a chief part. We shall be<br \/>\naccompanied by gunboats under<br \/>\ncommand of Captain Rodgers. I<br \/>\nsaw him on board of the Mystic,<br \/>\nGenl. Franklin\u2019s head quarters, a<br \/>\nfew days since and listened<br \/>\nto his explanation of a debarkation<br \/>\nunder fire. We shall probably have<br \/>\nto try it soon. This the General<br \/>\nsays. There will be two divisions<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 101:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>under the command of Genl. Franklin<br \/>\nand we shall operate against Glou-<br \/>\ncester. The expedition will be<br \/>\nsuccessful and make Genl. Franklin<br \/>\na Maj. General probably. He is able.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">23<\/span>,,<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">I<\/span> have been reading \u201cThe<br \/>\nPartisan Leader\u201d a work that<br \/>\nhas been laying about our cabin<br \/>\nquarters. It professes to have been<br \/>\nwritten a dozen or more years<br \/>\nsince and is curiously prophetic.<br \/>\nIt is nothing more than a compilation<br \/>\nof the arguments used by \u201cStates<br \/>\nRights men\u201d and a defense for<br \/>\nforcibly opposing the U.S. Government<br \/>\n\u2014an apology for disunion. It is harmless<br \/>\nI presume of it would not be<br \/>\nallowed publication. The writer is<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 102:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>evidently a full blooded South Carolinian.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">I<\/span> have been reading some very<br \/>\ninteresting fiction, too. Henry Arkell<br \/>\nis splendid and to my best liking.<br \/>\nStudent life\u2014its jealousies, rivalries<br \/>\nhonors, generous actions and mean<br \/>\nones, also, are portrayed in fine<br \/>\nterms. The chief actor is my favorite<br \/>\nas well as the Dean\u2019s and \u201call the<br \/>\nrest.\u201d If ever I shall be permitted<br \/>\nto resume my studies again may<br \/>\nit be with such a noble and<br \/>\nChristian spirit.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 58px;\">* * * *<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">They<\/span> say that we are going<br \/>\nto steam down to Fortress Munroe<br \/>\ntoday for pleasure.
