\nCamp Franklin, Va.
\nAt<\/span> 11 O\u2019k A.M. today
\nthere was a regimental formation
\nand certain exercise prescribed
\nby Genl orders No.16 from Headquarters.
\nI, being Adjutant pro tem, had
\nto read the extracts from Washington\u2019s
\nFarewell Address. It was an
\nexceedingly pleasant task. At
\nthe same time probably similar
\nexercises were going on at the
\nhead of hundreds of regiments
\nthroughout the country. All
\nis rejoicing everywhere- except
\nat the White House. There our
\nchief Magistrate sorrow stricken
\nat the untimely death of
\nhis little son can only
\nin part feel the happiness
\nwhich thrills the land.<\/p>\n

But what must be the
\nfeeling throughout the South?
\nThis was to be the day of
\ntheir Presidential inauguration.
\nJefferson Davis! What can be
\nthe feelings of this Arch Traitor?
\nwho has so long and so fatally
\nresisted the government and
\nConstitution of our fathers?
\nbut who, thank God, is soon to
\nreap the just, the merited reward
\nof a traitor. What a day is
\nthis for patriot loyal Americans!
\nWhat a day for vile and
\nungrateful rebels!
\nThis<\/span> day at the capitol
\nwill be presented to congress
\nthe flags that have been recently
\ncaptured in the South west
\nby our gallant troops.<\/p>\n

Guns are booming all
\naround us and every little
\nwhile cheers go up from
\nneighboring camps. Hail to
\nthe Stars Stripes! All honor
\nto the brave Illinoisians!
\nThis day will ever be remem-
\nbered in the annals of
\nAmerican history.
\nThe<\/span> \u201cBaltimore Clipper\u201d
\nbrings us still further
\ngood news. The rebels are
\nevacuating Manassas. In
\nRichmond there is a league
\nof Unionists, many thousands
\nin number, and they are
\nlooking anxiously for our
\nadvance on that city which
\nthey think can be easily
\ncaptured. They are ready to
\ntake up arms for the Stars<\/p>\n

\nto give up Nashville if private
\nproperty suffers no injury. Price
\ndefeated. Things look well.
