It was an<br \/>\nexceedingly pleasant task. At<br \/>\nthe same time probably similar<br \/>\nexercises were going on at the<br \/>\nhead of hundreds of regiments<br \/>\nthroughout the country. All<br \/>\nis rejoicing everywhere- except<br \/>\nat the White House. There our<br \/>\nchief Magistrate sorrow stricken<br \/>\nat the untimely death of<br \/>\nhis little son can only<br \/>\nin part feel the happiness<br \/>\nwhich thrills the land.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 47:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>But what must be the<br \/>\nfeeling throughout the South?<br \/>\nThis was to be the day of<br \/>\ntheir Presidential inauguration.<br \/>\nJefferson Davis! What can be<br \/>\nthe feelings of this Arch Traitor?<br \/>\nwho has so long and so fatally<br \/>\nresisted the government and<br \/>\nConstitution of our fathers?<br \/>\nbut who, thank God, is soon to<br \/>\nreap the just, the merited reward<br \/>\nof a traitor. What a day is<br \/>\nthis for patriot loyal Americans!<br \/>\nWhat a day for vile and<br \/>\nungrateful rebels!<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">This<\/span> day at the capitol<br \/>\nwill be presented to congress<br \/>\nthe flags that have been recently<br \/>\ncaptured in the South west<br \/>\nby our gallant troops.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 48:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Guns are booming all<br \/>\naround us and every little<br \/>\nwhile cheers go up from<br \/>\nneighboring camps. Hail to<br \/>\nthe Stars Stripes! All honor<br \/>\nto the brave Illinoisians!<br \/>\nThis day will ever be remem-<br \/>\nbered in the annals of<br \/>\nAmerican history.<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">The<\/span> \u201cBaltimore Clipper\u201d<br \/>\nbrings us still further<br \/>\ngood news. The rebels are<br \/>\nevacuating Manassas. In<br \/>\nRichmond there is a league<br \/>\nof Unionists, many thousands<br \/>\nin number, and they are<br \/>\nlooking anxiously for our<br \/>\nadvance on that city which<br \/>\nthey think can be easily<br \/>\ncaptured. They are ready to<br \/>\ntake up arms for the Stars<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Page 49:<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 10px;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>and Stripes. Johnston is ready<br \/>\nto give up Nashville if private<br \/>\nproperty suffers no injury. Price<br \/>\ndefeated.
