Beautiful weather, sun
\nshining brightly and a
\nslight ground swell on.
\nOmitted<\/span> tea last
\nevening; but took breakfast
\nthis morning.
\nThe<\/span> Capt. says we passed
\nHatteras about 4 o\u2019clock this
\nmorning.
\nWe<\/span> have now entered the
\nGulf stream, something I
\nremember of in my earlier
\nschool days as having been
\nlaid down some where [sic] in
\nMitchell\u2019s, where I can\u2019t say
\nneither what.
\nI<\/span> am now disposed to
\nlearn something of it, and
\nlisten with interest to all<\/p>\n

\ndown<\/span> along the Spanish.
\nConsequently<\/span> quick trips
\nare<\/span> made when the
\nsteamers<\/span> going to Europe
\nget<\/span> into the Gulf.
\nIII. Temperature of water
\nvery warm.
\nIV. Current runs from one<\/p>\n

\nV. Stream from forty
\nto seventy miles wide.
\nVI. Color of water black inkish –<\/p>\n

\nThe<\/span> mare is in fine
\ncondition this morning, the
\nswelling has gone down, and
\nnow I am more hopeful
\nthan ever of getting her
\nthrough safe.
\nBut<\/span> my advice is, if
\nyou have a good animal
\nthat you don\u2019t want to
\nhave spoiled never attempt
\nto make a sea voyage like
\nthis with her.<\/p>\n

We are now a little south
\nof the latitude of Charleston
\nand about two hundred miles
\nfrom land, the sea almost
\nas smooth as a mirror.
\nThe ease with which I write
\nthese memoranda proves the
\nsteadiness of our ship.<\/p>\n
