My dear Miss Coburn:
\nThis is my first opportunity for
\nacknowledging your letter of March 29th. It
\nwas full of interest, and I must thank you,
\nhere, for your kind expressions for me.<\/p>\n
I am wholly in accord with what
\nyou say. My suggestion in regard to a
\nplan to make Colby a college for women
\nalone, was intended merely to outline what
\nthe situation would seem to justify, from
\nthe point of view of the \u201cimpartial spectator,\u201d
\nwho had no knowledge of the past, and
\nwho should judge merely from the
\nconditions as they exist to-day in Maine.
\nAnd the only bearing of such an ideal
\nsuggestion upon our situation would be
\nthat it seems to furnish a strong
\nargument against any move to make the
\ncollege an institution for men alone, on the<\/p>\n

ground that there is no call, in Maine,
\nfor additional college facilities for men,
\nbut that there is a demand for the
\nbest and most generous provision for
\nthe higher education of women.<\/p>\n
I agree with you further that there is
\nno advantage in calling things by
\nmisleading names. A step in the direction
\nyou point out has been taken in dropping
\nthe name College for the section of
\nthe institution devoted either to men or
\nto women, and substituting the name
\nDivision. We speak of the Women\u2019s Division,
\nand the Men\u2019s Division.<\/p>\n
For my own part, I have no sort
\nof idea that the college will close
\nits doors to women. And much as I regret
\nthat the question has been thrust upon<\/p>\n

us just now, I am very hopeful that
\nmuch good will come out of the
\nagitation. Of course no one foresaw
\nwhat was coming. It was like a bolt
\nfrom the clear heavens. Had I suspected
\nit, I do not suppose I should have
\ntaken the step I did, in sending my
\nresignation to the Chairman of the Board.
\nI do not like to seem to leave the
\nship while a storm of any sort is in
\nprogress. But that matter was con-
\ncluded before the storm arose.<\/p>\n
Again let me thank you for the
\npersonal kindness of your letter. Please
\nremember me with cordial regard
\nfor all at your home.<\/p>\n
