Dear Miss Coburn,
\nI have been looking for a
\nletter from you for several days. Did you
\nreceive Dr. Bakeman\u2019s letter that I enclosed
\nfor your reading?<\/p>\n
I received yesterday a letter from Mrs.
\nDr. Pepper. She wrote very kindly thanking
\nme for what I have done, a \u201cservice\u201d, as she
\ncalls it. This new movement, she says, \u201cis a
\nconcession to the laziest and worst elements
\nin the college and out.\u201d<\/p>\n
I heartily appreciate the feeling which prompts
\nher to write so plainly when to do it she is
\nobliged, as she says, \u201cto take issue with the pres-
\nent administration.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nof free speech and free thought say out his<\/p>\n
\none high in authority. I am heartily sick and
\ndisgusted with the whole thing. But I do<\/span> feel
\nthat the moral<\/span> victory is ours though we may
\nhave to wait long years for the triumph of the
\nright. I think we should get many more
\nwords of commendation, if people felt free to
\nspeak.<\/p>\n
\nOf course it reminded him<\/span> of a story. \u201cThere
\nwas an Irishman who had a boy and when the
\nboy was little his father used to whip him.
\nWhen the boy grew up, however, he gave his
\nfather a whipping<\/span>, but the Irishman said
\n\u2018he never could \u2018a\u2019 done it, if he<\/span> hadn\u2019t
\nbrought \u2018im up.\u201d Pretty good, wasn\u2019t it.<\/p>\n
\nordered 100 more at the mail office. We ex-
\npected to have them for about $3.00, in
\nwhich case we, who live here, would have
\ntaken them. But owing to the fact that about<\/p>\n
\nto be re-set, they have cost us the enor-
\nmous sum of $10.00. The money already as-
\nsessed from the girls pays the bills thus far
\nbut these 100 must be paid for in some
\nway. Now what I wish is that the girls
\nwould take as many as they can afford to at
\nthe rate at which they come, 10 cts. per copy,
\nand help us out. I will take ten, Alice
\nfive, Hattie five and more, she says, if we
\ncan\u2019t dispose of them all. I have written to see
\nif Bertha Soule will take five or ten.<\/p>\n
\nperhaps, work good for our cause if sent to
\nfriends of the college. I think the enemies of
\nco-education will do all they can to ignore
\nour action and cover it up and for that rea-
\nson I want as many as possible to know
\nof what we have done. Dr. Bakeman requested
\nme to send a copy to Dr. Upham of Chelsea, an
\nold graduate and I have done so. Prof. Hall said something to Hattie
\nabout copies to send around to the libraries<\/p>\n
\nhave heard nothing more about it.<\/p>\n
\nlet me know as soon as possible?<\/p>\n
\nthese new girls, whether to invite them to
\njoin us or not. I am inclined to think, as you
\ndo, that perhaps it is best just now<\/span> to take
\nthem in while the new plan is on trial.<\/p>\n
\nI say, \u201cBetter bury the society than degrade
\nit.\u201d If, in time, the character of the girls does
\nreally degenerate very much<\/span>, I should think
\nit would be better to refuse to admit any
\nmore and let the society die. But it hurts
\nme<\/span> to think of it, and of course we should
\nuse much of our hold and our influence
\namong the under-graduates. The Cons. pro-
\nvides, they say, for only 25 acting members.
\nWhat is to be done? If we take in all<\/span> of
\nthese new girls, it will have to be changed.
\nWe might choose<\/span> those we want, but it
\nseems selfish when there is no other so-
\nciety for them to join. What do you think?
