\nIt seems to me a step backward,
\nand far backward. It was very
\nsuddenly put <\/del>carried through, and comes
\nI suppose as an entire surprise
\nto many. I don\u2019t believe there
\nhas been anything in the
\nway of friction in the College
\nwhich a proper attitude on the
\npart of the faculty would not
\nsoon <\/del>have put right. I have felt
\nvery badly indeed about it<\/del> the matter,
\nhow badly I need not try to
\ndescribe.<\/p>\n
\ngladly have signed any remonstrance <\/del>protest
\nin regard to the matter, and
\neven thought seriously of getting<\/del>
\nstarting one, but was not certain
\nof the wisdom of it. Now
\nhowever I feel differently. I
\nhave several friends on the
\nBoard of Trustees among those
\nwho so bravely opposed the change, and
\nI have heard from them
\nquite particularly how the<\/del> about the
\ninside history of the movement.
\n[whole matter was carried
\nthrough]<\/span>. I am sure that no
\nremonstrance from any source would have made
\nany difference with the result.
\nOf course<\/del> It is still more
\ncertain that no remonstrance
\nwould now make any difference
\nor produce any effect on the
\nBoard. All that we would
\naccomplish would be to put on<\/p>\n
\nrecord our own opinion <\/del>conviction and
\nfeeling. Of course there is
\ngreat satisfaction in that, but
\nwe don\u2019t want to overlook the
\npractical results.<\/p>\n
\ntime that I wished the alumnae
\nmight have a meeting to consider
\na ways and means. I think
\nwe ought to act together, and
\nattempt to make our influence
\nfelt in the direction of the
\nbest good of Colby and her
\nwoman students. Now what I
\nquestion is – is it best to put
\nourselves in recorded opposition
\nto the Trustees when nothing
\nbut the relief of our feelings
\ncan possibly be effected by it.
\nWould it not impair the influence
\nof any words we<\/del> expression might want
\nto express <\/del>make in the future<\/p>\n
\nin regard to some measure
\nwhich still lay within the
\nregion of the unsettled possible debatable?<\/del> undecided.
\nI have heard it hinted that
\namong future measures might
\nbe changes in the curriculum,
\nor in markings or degrees,
\nabout which the expression
\nof our opinion to the Trustees
\nmight have weight, especially
\nif we had taken no stand
\nin opposition to them.<\/p>\n
\npossible advantage in the
\nbusiness <\/del>movement \u2013 that is that it may lead
\nthe Faculty to treat the girls more
\ndecently than they have done
\nof late. That certainly is something. It is nothing but the
\nposition of the Faculty that has
\nkept down the number of girls,
\nand if they should change front, +
\nshould make efforts
\nsome [illegible] are back<\/del> to<\/p>\n
\nencourage the [?] of it would [illegible] strange?
\n[bring<\/del>] girls there, strong efforts
\nmay <\/del>would be successful. The
\nfaculty are pledged<\/span> to support
\nthe new movement, and this
\nmust mean <\/del>involve a radical change
\nof base on their part in regard to the girls.
\nIf a large number of our
\nbright young girls never should come
\nthere<\/del> to Colby, I think they would
\nsettle some questions better
\nthan any one could for them,
\n+ differently from what they
\nhave ever been settled before.<\/p>\n
\nwomen at Colby has a future.
\nI can\u2019t see just now very clearly<\/del>
\nwhat it is. But I think it is<\/del> may be a different
\none and a larger one than the
\ntrustees can at present grasp or [plan]<\/del>.
\nWisdom has certainly not come into
\nthe world with Pres. Small + it
\nwill probably not go out with him.<\/p>\n
\nThis new movement may work itself
\ninto something altogether different
\nfrom what they <\/del>he thinks, or from what
\nwe think. There may come a time
\nwhen the friends of Colby can
\nsay [aloud<\/del>?] with some hope of being
\nlistened to, Let us go back ?<\/del>
\nI do<\/del> I am sure<\/del> feel now that all
\nwe can do is to submit, and
\nthat any remonstrance is as idle
\nas the wind.<\/p>\n
\nletter. It is a matter on which I have
\nfelt very strongly<\/del> deeply. My thought now
\nis quite strong that I am afraid
\nthe effect of a remonstrance <\/del> protest will
\nbe to cause the Trustees to feel
\nthat we have put ourselves in
\nopposition to them, + this to sully
\nthe influence which we ought to
\nhave +exert in the future.
\nI hope [illegible] no strike will be [lasting?] [illegible] taken.
\nI am sure you and I think<\/p>\n
\nentirely alike on this question,
\neven if we should not agree
\non regard<\/del> to ways + means.<\/p>\n
