{"id":675,"date":"2012-07-17T16:04:19","date_gmt":"2012-07-17T20:04:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/csc-lowcoburn\/?page_id=675"},"modified":"2022-01-29T03:10:11","modified_gmt":"2022-01-29T08:10:11","slug":"transcription-low-to-coburn-7171890","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/csc-home\/transcription-low-to-coburn-7171890\/","title":{"rendered":"Transcription of letter from Mary Low to Louise Coburn, 7\/17\/1890"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Waterville, July 17, 1890<\/p>\n<p>Dear Miss Coburn,<\/p>\n<p>It has been lately ascer-<br \/>\ntained that many of the Alumnae of Colby<br \/>\ndisapprove most heartily of the recent action<br \/>\nof the board of trustees with reference to<br \/>\nthe higher education of women.<\/p>\n<p>Doubtless you have received the circular<br \/>\nlately issued by the college in reference<br \/>\nto the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Some of us think it out right and even<br \/>\nduty in view of all the circumstances,<br \/>\nto protest and let them know what<br \/>\nwe think in regard to the matter.<\/p>\n<p>A circular is in preparation, con-<br \/>\ntaining such a protest and respectfully<br \/>\nasking them to reconsider their action.<\/p>\n<p>The probability is that the protest will<br \/>\nbe sent even with a small number of<br \/>\nsignatures; but it will be much more ef-<br \/>\nfective if all sign it, especially of the<br \/>\nolder Alumnae.<\/p>\n<p>We mean that it shall be courteous<br \/>\nand just, yet honest and vigorous.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know how you feel about this<br \/>\nmatter but judging from the position<br \/>\nof yourself and family in the past, I<br \/>\nfeel assured that you would act with us.<\/p>\n<p>Will you kindly write me your<br \/>\nidea of the matter and say if you<br \/>\nwould probably give us your signature?<\/p>\n<p>We want to hurry the matter along as<br \/>\nfast as possible and also keep it a<br \/>\n\u201cprofound\u201d secret among the Alumnae.<\/p>\n<p>Truly yours<br \/>\nMary L.
