She was a Baptist, and her favorite literary work was Horace\u2019s <em>Odes<\/em>. She briefly pursued a career as an assistant at the Wayland Seminary in Washington D.C., educating and training African-American freedmen to enter the ministry, from 1888 to 1889. Then she moved to Minnewaska, New York with her husband (George H. Smiley), had several daughters and a son, and together they were the proprietors of the Lake Minnewaska Mountain Houses. She was known for her \u201cSmiley\u201d hospitality, and in her spare time, she taught in a Mission Sunday School of the estate.
