White was born in North Harpswell, Maine, and graduated from Colby (University) in 1886 to pursue teaching. While at Colby, she was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority and won the female component of the \u201cJunior Part\u201d College Award. She moved first to Somerville, Massachusetts, where she taught from 1886 to 1893, and then Brooklyn, New York, where she started teaching in 1893 at the Girls\u2019 High School with her fellow Colby graduate Julia Winslow \u201986.<\/p>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-568\" data-postid=\"568\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-568 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colby 1886 Bessie R.
