Colby, 1884.<\/p>\n<p>Sophia May Hanson was born in Portland, Maine on September 21, 1859. She was the daughter of James Hobbs Hanson (Class of Colby 1842, and principal of Waterville Academy) and Mary Ellen Field. She attended Coburn Classical Institute (then Waterville Classical Institute) and graduated from Colby in 1881. After graduation, she taught Latin and Greek at Coburn Classical Institute from 1882-1884, and later taught in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1884-1887. She married Edward Pierce, a Waterville photographer, and had two sons, Chester and Harry. Sixteen years after her husband\u2019s death in 1903, she remarried Eugene R. Mace. She was an early member of Sigma Kappa, becoming its 13th initiate.<\/p>\n<p>Based on <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/csc-home\/letters-1890\/\">Mary Low\u2019s letter from Sept. 12, 1890<\/a>, Sophia Hanson did not sign the petition for coeducation. Although Hanson favored coeducation and her husband voted against the new plan to create a men\u2019s and women\u2019s division, Low remarks that Hanson &#8220;has little interest in college matters now.&#8221; Hanson lived until she was 90 years old, and died on March 28, 1950.<\/p>\n<p>no images were found<\/p>\n\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-361\" data-postid=\"361\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-361 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A.B., Colby, 1881; A.M.
