[bracket: Sailing down
the Potomac] We are having a
most pleasant trip. It is warm
and at the same time breezy.
As we passed Fort Washington
the garrison cheered us lustily
and their band played. * * * Now we are off Matthias
Point and moving slowly over
the shoal places. It grows
cloudy and looks like rain.
It sprinkles. We shall have
something of a storm tonight.
We have passed the rebel
batteries and the wonder to
all is that the enemy
should ever have deserted
them.
