Many of Jewett\u2019s works take place in the area and derive their importance from her careful descriptions of local color. In 1901 she became the first female recipient of an honorary degree in literature from Bowdoin College. She died at the age of 59 in her birthplace of South Berwick. Jewett&#8217;s works include: <strong><em>Mr. Bruce<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>Deephaven<\/strong>, <strong>A Country Doctor<\/strong>, <strong>A White Heron<\/strong>, <strong>Country of the Pointed Firs<\/strong>, <strong>The Dulham Ladies<\/strong>,<\/em> and <strong><em>The Tory Lover<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.colby.edu\/cq\/vol5\/iss3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 1959<\/a> issue of the <em>Colby Library Quarterly<\/em> features articles on Jewett&#8217;s life and work, marking the 50th anniversary of her death.<\/p>\n<p>Additional work consulted:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Theodora Sarah Orne Jewett.&#8221; American National Biography Online.
