Khayy\u00e1m was a Persian polymath, mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, physician, and poet from Neyshapur, in modern day Iran. The author of treatises on mechanics, geography, and music, Khayy\u00e1m was one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of the medieval period. He wrote the most important treatise on algebra in pre-modern times and proposed a heliocentric theory centuries before Copernicus. (fineartnouveau.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Edward FitzGerald made Khayy\u00e1m the most famous poet of the East in the West through his celebrated (some would say \u201cfanciful\u201d) translation and adaptations of Khayy\u00e1m&#8217;s rather small number of quatrains (rubaiyaas) in Rub\u00e1iy\u00e1t of Omar Khayy\u00e1m, which also led to his revival among Iranian readers. The many editions of the Rub\u00e1iy\u00e1t feature exquisite bindings and illustrations. The collection was assembled by Curator Carl Weber to commemorate the centennial in 1959, as described in a <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.colby.edu\/cq\/vol5\/iss1\/4\/\" target=\"_blank\">March 1959 article<\/a> in the <em>Colby Library Quarterly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>IN THE CATALOG&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our <em>Rub\u00e1iy\u00e1t<\/em> Collection features more than two hundred editions. They are on view in our main reading room.
