Dear Friends,<\/p>\n
Whenever faced with a personal or national crisis, it is my custom to go \u201cback to the sources\u201d for comfort and inspiration. Allow me to share with you a number of biblical and rabbinic insights about the current crisis.<\/p>\n
Prayer:<\/strong>\u00a0When Jacob was about to face Esau after many years of estrangement, the midrash (Tanhuma Buber, Vayishlah<\/em>\u00a06) tells us that he did three things — and the first was to pray.\u00a0\u00a0When our biblical ancestors were faced with a crisis ‘\u05d5\u05d9\u05e6\u05e2\u05e7\u05d5 \u05d0\u05dc \u05d4, they cried out to God. When Jews are faced with a health crisis, they recite Psalms such as chapters 121 and 130 and the\u00a0Mee Sheberakh<\/em>\u00a0prayer for those who are ill.<\/p>\n Jewish Unity:<\/strong>\u00a0We are told in the Talmud (Shevuot<\/em>\u00a039a) \u05db\u05dc \u05d9\u05e9\u05e8\u05d0\u05dc \u05e2\u05e8\u05d1\u05d9\u05df \u05d6\u05d4 \u05d1\u05d6\u05d4 — \u201cAll Jews are responsible for one another\u201d. This has always been the strength of the Jewish people, how much the more so in times of crisis.<\/p>\n We are all in the same boat:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cRabbi Shimon bar Yochai taught: It can be compared to people who were in a boat and one of them took a drill and began to drill under his seat. His fellow passengers said to him: \u2018why are you doing this!\u2019 He said to them: \u2018What do you care? Am I not drilling under me?\u2019 They replied: \u2018Because you are sinking the boat with us in it!\u2019\u201d (Vayikra Rabbah<\/em>\u00a04:6, ed. Margaliot, pp. 91-92). The entire world is in the same boat. If we do not help each other, we are in danger of sinking the entire boat.<\/p>\n Leave no one behind:<\/strong>\u00a0We read in Numbers chapter 12 that Miriam was \u201cshut out of camp for seven days [with leprosy] and the people did not march until Miriam was readmitted\u201d (v. 15). From this we learn that when one person is quarantined, the rest of the community must wait for them until they recover.<\/p>\n Talk to each other:<\/strong>\u00a0In Sotah 42b there is a discussion of the verse (Proverbs 12:25): \u05d3\u05d0\u05d2\u05d4 \u05d1\u05dc\u05d1 \u05d0\u05d9\u05e9 \u05d9\u05e9\u05d7\u05e0\u05d4 \u2013 \u201cIf there is anxiety in a man\u2019s heart, let him —\u201c. The question is, what does the last word mean? One rabbi says that he should put the anxiety out of his mind, while the other says that he should discuss it with others. Indeed, some people deal with a crisis by putting it out of their mind, but most people find comfort in talking about it with other people.<\/p>\n Hope:<\/strong>\u00a0From\u00a0Rosh Hodesh Elul<\/em>\u00a0until\u00a0Hoshanah Rabbah<\/em>, Ashkenazic Jews recite Psalm 27 twice a day. The final verse says ‘\u05e7\u05d5\u05d4 \u05d0\u05dc \u05d4’, \u05d7\u05d6\u05e7 \u05d5\u05d9\u05d0\u05de\u05e5 \u05dc\u05d1\u05da, \u05d5\u05e7\u05d5\u05d4 \u05d0\u05da \u05d4 \u2013 \u201cHope in the Lord, be strong and let your heart take courage, yea, hope in the Lord.\u201d Indeed, it is not an accident that the Israeli national anthem is called\u00a0Hatikvah<\/em>, the Hope.<\/p>\n Let us carry these insights with us as we all work\u00a0together\u00a0<\/strong>to overcome this deadly virus as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n [March 17]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Dear Friends, Whenever faced with a personal or national crisis, it is my custom to go \u201cback to the sources\u201d for comfort and inspiration.
