{"id":1518,"date":"2020-07-07T21:21:16","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T01:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/coronaguidance\/?p=1518"},"modified":"2020-07-30T22:51:13","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T02:51:13","slug":"crc-17-tammuz-9-av","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/coronaguidance\/2020\/07\/07\/crc-17-tammuz-9-av\/","title":{"rendered":"Rabbi Yona Reiss, Chicago Rabbinical Council: Fasting on 17 Tammuz and 9 Av"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In terms of fasting on Shiva Asar BeTamuz, there is more for leniency this year for anyone feeling weak or who has difficulty fasting in general (see Yalkut Yosef, Moadim, pp. 531-532).&nbsp; Pregnant and nursing women should not fast, even if they are normally stringent (see Rema, Orach Chaim 550:1, MB 3-4).&nbsp; Tisha Be\u2019av has a stricter standard for pregnant and nursing women, and the presumption for most healthy people is that they should fast unless they are bedridden or in such severe discomfort that they are unable to function normally (\u05d7\u05d5\u05dc\u05d4 \u05e9\u05d0\u05d9\u05df \u05d1\u05d5 \u05e1\u05db\u05e0\u05d4).&nbsp; However, in connection with both fasts including Tisha B\u2019av this year, anyone who is immuno-compromised or above 60 should not fast in my opinion unless approved by a doctor.
