After the show,<\/p>\n<p>just to let their hearts race and taste<br \/>\nwhat they\u2019d seen for themselves,<br \/>\nthe audiences felt in purses,<br \/>\nshirt pockets, and even inside<\/p>\n<p>the sleeves of T-shirts, where packs<br \/>\nof cigarettes were folded, by a method<br \/>\nnow largely forgotten. \u201cGot a light?\u201d<br \/>\nsomebody would say, \u201cCould I burn<\/p>\n<p>one of yours?\u201d never thinking<br \/>\nthat two of the questions most<br \/>\nasked by Americans everywhere<br \/>\nwould undo themselves and disappear<\/p>\n<p>like the smoke that rose<br \/>\nbetween their upturned fingers,<br \/>\nunwanted in a new nation<br \/>\nof smoke-free movie theaters,<\/p>\n<p>malls and restaurants, where politicians<br \/>\nin every state take moral positions<br \/>\nagainst cigarettes so they can tax them<br \/>\nfor their favorite projects. Just fifty years<\/p>\n<p>after Bogart and Bacall, smoking<br \/>\nis mostly left in the hands of waitresses<br \/>\nhuddled outside fancy inns, or old<br \/>\nclerks on the night shift in mini-marts,<\/p>\n<p>or hard-hats from the road crew<br \/>\non a coffee-break around the battered<br \/>\ntailgate of a sand truck\u2014all paying<br \/>\non installment with every drag<\/p>\n<p>for bridges and schools.
