Bad enough I now owned a penis<br \/>\nso unpredictable I had to put books<br \/>\non it walking down school halls. I had your long<br \/>\narches and toes which, whatever I put on them, stuck out<br \/>\nall the more. Great pedicles, those first cordovans<br \/>\nwere the worst, deep maroon dream shoes<br \/>\nthat floated footless on their page in the catalogue<br \/>\nI ordered from, and arrived dead weights<br \/>\nin a huge box, so red and shiny<br \/>\nand durable, their names lasted through two years<br \/>\nof high school: Clodhoppers, Platters, Skis.<br \/>\nAnd years later, when I took you to dinner parties<br \/>\nwhere they were too polite to name you<br \/>\nand just stopped talking altogether\u2014when I sat<br \/>\nwith legs crossed holding my teacup in that parlor<br \/>\nin Chile and suddenly noticed the small people<br \/>\nseated around me were staring at how the pulse<br \/>\nlifted my big foot as it hung there in front of them,<br \/>\nwas I any better off? How could I tell them<br \/>\nthat I understood they had all they could do<br \/>\nnot to begin crossing themselves right there,<br \/>\nthat inside my foot and my outsized body,<br \/>\nI only wanted to be small, too? But peace,<br \/>\nold toe-lifters, if I couldn\u2019t accept you then,<br \/>\nif just last month I stood barefoot before my family<br \/>\nand called you in jest my Oscar-Mayer five-packs<br \/>\nwiggling a big toe while singing, as in<br \/>\nthe commercial, \u201cI wish I were an Oscar-Mayer wiener,<br \/>\nforgive the bad joke and the accusations, this<br \/>\nhas never been your fault. Uncovered with fitting in,<br \/>\nall you ever wanted was to take me in the direction<br \/>\nof my own choosing. Never mind the hands<br \/>\ngetting all the attention as they wave to others<br \/>\non the street, this is not their poem,<br \/>\nbut only yours, steady vessels, who all along<br \/>\nhave resisted my desire to be like everyone else,<br \/>\nwho turn after the hands are done and carry me<br \/>\nwith resolute steps into my separate life.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<td
