Old guys know trucks,<br \/>\nhaving spent days on their backs under them<br \/>\nor cars. You\u2019ve seen the gray face<br \/>\nof the garage mechanic lying on his pallet, old<br \/>\nbefore his time, and the gray, as he turns<br \/>\nhis wrench looking up through the smoke<br \/>\nof his cigarette, around the pupil<br \/>\nof his eye. This comes from concentrating<br \/>\non things the rest of us refuse<br \/>\nto be bothered with, like the thickening<br \/>\nline of dirt in front of the janitor\u2019s<br \/>\npush broom as he goes down the hall, or the same<br \/>\nten eyelets inspector number four checks<br \/>\non the shoe, or the box after box<br \/>\nthe newspaper man brings to a stop<br \/>\nin the morning dark outside the window<br \/>\nof his car. Becoming expert in such details<br \/>\nis what has made the retired old guy<br \/>\nbehind the shopping cart at the discount store<br \/>\nappear so lost. Beside him his large wife,<br \/>\nwho\u2019s come through poverty and starvation<br \/>\nof feeling, hungry for promises of more<br \/>\nfor less, knows just where she is,<br \/>\nand where and who she is sitting by his side<br \/>\na year or so later in the hospital<br \/>\nas he lies stunned by the failure of his heart<br \/>\nor lung. \u201cYour father\u201d is what she calls him,<br \/>\nwearing her permanent expression<br \/>\nof sadness, and the daughter, obese<br \/>\nand starved herself, calls him \u201cDaddy,\u201d<br \/>\na child\u2019s word, crying for a tenderness<br \/>\nthe two of them never knew. Nearby, her husband,<br \/>\nwho resembles his father-in-law in spite<br \/>\nof his Elvis sideburns, doesn\u2019t say<br \/>\neven to himself what\u2019s going on inside him,<br \/>\nonly grunts and stares as if the conversation<br \/>\nthey were having concerned a missing bolt<br \/>\nor some extra job the higher-ups just gave him<br \/>\nbecause this is what you do when you\u2019re bound,<br \/>\nafter an interminable, short life to be an old guy.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<table border=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;
