As night<br \/>\ncame on in suburban neighborhoods<br \/>\nperhaps like yours, families unfolded<br \/>\nthe legs of dinner trays, longingto be in the studio audience with the host<br \/>\nof the variety show, or in the white kitchen<br \/>\nwith the mother and her children as the father<br \/>\narrived at the right moment in his dark suit<br \/>\nwith the knowledge the rest of them craved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt needs more contrast,\u201d someone would say,<br \/>\nadjusting a knob until the vegetable slicer<br \/>\nthey saw between programs or the black and white<br \/>\nshoes or the kitchen range with the glow-clock<br \/>\nin the changing world behind the glass<\/p>\n<p>looked real, then bought the slicer, the shoes,<br \/>\nthe kitchen range, and even the new TV<br \/>\nthat their old TV said would make them feel<br \/>\nlike they were there. This was how the first<br \/>\nblack and white TVs made their way<\/p>\n<p>to the homes of the poor, who loved them best,<br \/>\nturning from disappointment all day long<\/p>\n<p>to watch people opening the doors of ranges<br \/>\nand cars, or men with easy-going smiles<br \/>\ngive them away on game shows. When they kicked<\/p>\n<p>their sets or pounded them, it was mostly<br \/>\nbecause the picture was starting to roll<br \/>\nand ruin the happy ending they were so anxious<br \/>\nto see.
